Doctor Syn Reviews

This British period piece features Arliss in his last role. He is the onetime notorious pirate Clegg, who is taken for dead, but has in reality shown up 20 years later as the vicar of Dymchurch and is still the head of his pirates, who have become smugglers. While using the cover of a cleric, he smuggles at will, and uses the profits for the betterment of the little coastal village over which he presides. The transition from ruthless pirate to pastor is explained by Arliss' education in law school. All of Arliss' plans are thwarted when a revenue agent unmasks him and his band of cutthroats. Film was remade as NIGHT CREATURES in 1962 and then again as DR. SYN, ALIAS THE SCARECROW (1975), produced by Disney.
