Albers does not play Conan Doyle's character, but a man who is mistaken for the great sleuth and decides to go along with the impersonation. His friend, Ruhmann, is assumed to be Watson, and the pair get involved in tracking down rare and counterfeit stamps during the 1936 World Exposition in Paris. While searching for the real stamps, Albers is arrested for impersonating Sherlock Holmes but always in the background is a chuckling man who looks like the real Holmes. He turns out to be none other than Conan Doyle (Bildt) and he helps overturn Albers' conviction at the trial by declaring Sherlock Holmes to be his fictitious character and by giving Albers the right to be called "the man who was Sherlock Holmes." Albers was one of Germany's biggest movie stars, often called the German Gable, and Sherlock Holmes movies were big hits with German audiences in the 1930s.
