Canaris Reviews

This fascinating postwar German film chronicles the life of Nazi counterintelligence head Admiral Canaris, brilliantly played by stage actor Hasse. The story involves Hasse's slow disillusionment with Hitler and his evil empire. As the war drags on, Hasse flirts with participation in anti-Hitler groups but hesitates to commit himself. Finally, by 1944, he has had enough of watching Germany's self-destruction and fails in an attempt to overthrow Hitler. For his betrayal he is stripped of his rank and thrown into a concentration camp. This is well made and well acted.
