Bedtime Story Reviews

A disappointing attempt at comedy, considering the names of the creators and the adroitness of the stars. Maybe it's that certain people just should not be given jobs outside their ken. One wouldn't cast Niven in a Clint Eastwood role so why cast Brando in a Niven role? This is supposedly a light comedy by Shapiro (PILLOW TALK, OPERATION PETTICOAT) and Henning (Creator of "The Beverly Hillbillies"), but the souffle falls flat due to Brando's heavy performance. Brando and Niven are two con men in Europe. After we see their various ploys, the two men meet, team up, and are rent asunder when both fall for Jones, who is, they are told, a "soap queen." Thinking that she may be a Lever Brothers' sister or either Miss Procter or Gamble, they both turn their attentions to her. The truth is that she is the winner of a beauty contest. Lots of silliness, a contest for Shirley's affections, Brando posing as a cripple (always lots of laughs), and more. Light-hearted but heavy-handed. Good work by all the second bananas, and a nice score by Salter.
