Giuseppe Garibaldi's (Raf Vallone) retreat from Rome in 1849 is the background of this study of the Italian patriot and his wife (Anna Magnani). Alain Cuny, Jacques Sernas, Carlo Ninchi.

This labored war film about Italy's fiery military adventurer Garibaldi recounts the soldier's Risorgimento campaigns. Vallone is Garibaldi, and Magnani is his wife. Even the battle scenes are confusing and poorly organized in this tiresome film that is wholly lacking in character development. Magnani, a fine actress, is meant to be the archetypical strong woman behind a strong man, but is wasted in a thankless role.
