A Young World Reviews

Pretentious little effort by De Sica features Delaroche and Castelnuovo as a Paris medical student and an Italian freelance photographer who meet and fall in love at a ball, where they retire to a secluded alcove. Later she discovers that she is pregnant. Castelnuovo is in a quandary, torn between making a commitment to this woman or keeping his free lifestyle. He allows himself to be seduced by an older woman to get money for an abortion, but Delaroche refuses to go through with it. Finally, they go to a movie and the film ends unresolved. This is a sad effort by De Sica, one of the world's finest directors. He seems intent here on imitating the French New Wave, and the result is an unsatisfying hodge podge. (In French; English subtitles.)
