Hollywood's release date schedule looks a whole lot different right now
Thanks to nationwide movie theater shutdowns amid the coronavirus pandemic, Hollywood's film release schedule is rapidly changing. Several major movies have skipped theaters altogether and instead hit on-demand and streaming services, but dozens of other high-profile pictures have simply delayed their release plans for a later date. To keep track of all of the studios' major delays, we've assembled this look at all of the movies that have had their release dates pushed back, including sequels like F9: Fast and Furious 9, Mission: Impossible 7, The Matrix 4, and Wonder Woman 1984; the latest James Bond movie No Time to Die; reboots of the CandyMan and Saw franchises; and Disney pictures like the live-action Mulan movie and the new Star Wars trilogy movies. The release of A Quiet Place II, the sequel to the hit 2018 horror film, was one of the first movies to be delayed as a result of the coronavirus outbreak, which director John Krasinski confirmed in an Instagram note to fans. Paramount has now rescheduled the movie's release for April 23, 2021. The film was originally scheduled for release in the U.K. and Australia on March 19 and in North America on March 20.
The release of Guillermo Del Toro's Antlers has been delayed until Feb. 19, 2021.
Production on James Cameron's upcoming sequels to Avatar was delayed as a result of the coronavirus. Though the films returned to production earlier than most, their release dates were still delayed by about a year each. Avatar 2 will now arrive on Dec. 6, 2022; Avatar 3 has moved to Dec. 20, 2024; Avatar 4 has moved to Dec. 18, 2026; and Avatar 5 has been pushed back to Dec. 22, 2028.
The release date for Kristen Wiig-starring film Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar has moved to July 16, 2021.
The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson as the titular superhero, has been pushed back to March. 4, 2022. Fellow DC superhero film Introducing The Flash is now set to premiere June 2, 2022, and Shazam 2 will launch on Nov. 4, 2022.
After a number of delays, the premiere of Marvel's Black Widow, starring Scarlett Johansson, has been moved to May 7, 2021. This has pushed back the entire Marvel slate: Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings moved to July 9, 2021, and Eternals moved to Nov. 5, 2021. The untitled third Spider-Man movie starring Tom Holland has been pushed back to Dec. 17, 2021. Thor: Love and Thunder has shifted to Feb. 11, 2022, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is now set for March 25, 2022. Captain Marvel 2 is now set for July 8, 2022. The status of Black Panther 2 is currently unknown.
The release date for Nia DaCosta's upcoming reboot of Candyman, executive produced by Jordan Peele (who also co-wrote the movie with DaCosta and Win Rosenfeld), has once again been moved, this time to an undetermined date in 2021.
Kenneth Branagh's new star-studded Agatha Christie adaptation Death on the Nile, which sees him return to his Murder on the Orient Express role as detective Hercule Poirot, has been pushed back to Dec. 18, 2020.
The premiere of F9 has been pushed back almost a year. The North American premiere will now be April 2, 2021, with international debuts rolling out throughout that month.
Wes Anderson's The French Dispatch, a dramedy about an American magazine operating in a fictional French town, has now been delayed indefinitely. The movie was originally scheduled to hit theaters on Oct. 16, 2020.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife has been pushed to March 5, 2021. A direct sequel to the first two Ghostbusters movies, the film stars Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, and Paul Rudd. Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, and Annie Potts all reprise their roles from the original films.
The sequel to The Hitman's Bodyguard, starring Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson, has moved to Aug. 20, 2021.
The next installment of the Keanu Reeves-led film series has officially been pushed back to May 27, 2022, a year after its originally scheduled release date.
The next movie in the Jackass franchise has now been pushed back to Sept. 3, 2021.
Disney's Jungle Cruise, starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt, has been moved to July 30, 2021.
The release of the Kingsmen prequel The King's Man has been pushed to Feb. 12, 2021. The movie, a World War I period piece directed by Matthew Vaughn, stars Ralph Fiennes, Daniel Bruhl, Gemma Arterton, Stanley Tucci, Matthew Goode, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Djimon Hounsou.
Ridley Scott's The Last Duel has been delayed until Oct. 15, 2021. The movie stars Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Adam Driver, and Jodie Comer.
Edgar Wright's Last Night in Soho has now had its release date pushed back to April 23, 2021. The psychological thriller, which stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Matt Smith, centers on a girl who finds herself suddenly transported to the 1960s, where she meets her hero, an aspiring singer.
Due to production shutdowns, the Wachowskis' highly anticipated next installment in the Matrix franchise was pushed back to April 1, 2022. Warner Bros. gave its original May 2021 release date to Godzilla vs. Kong. The anticipated sequel will see Keanu Reeves reprise his role as Neo, alongside Carrie-Anne Moss as Trinity and Jada Pinkett Smith as Niobe.
Minions: The Rise of Gru was pushed back a full year, to July 2, 2021.
The seventh installment of the Mission Impossible franchise has now been pushed to Nov. 19, 2021, and Mission: Impossible 8 will move its release date to Nov. 4, 2022.
Disney's live-action adaptation of Mulan made its debut on Sept. 4, 2020, on Disney+. The film is under "premiere access" on the platform and costs $29.99 to stream, but it will go wide to all Disney+ users on Dec. 4, 2020. The film was also released theatrically in countries where theaters have reopened.
The New Mutants was theatrically released in the United States on Aug. 20, 2020, after a number of delays from its original premiere date in April 2018.
For those who are hoping to see Daniel Craig back in action as Agent 007, you're in for a long wait. No Time to Die is now set to hit theaters on April 2, 2021, a year after its initial planned release date. The movie was the first major film to push back its release date in the spring, though Craig still showed up to host Saturday Night Live as scheduled in March. He even offered fans a fake clip from the film.
The Personal History of David Copperfield, starring Dev Patel, was theatrically released Aug. 28, 2020 after a slight delay.
Disney's Raya and the Last Dragon, starring Kelly Marie Tran, will now debut March 12, 2021.
Universal pushed the release date for its sequel to the animated film Sing to Dec. 22, 2021.
Pixar film Soul will now debut in theaters on Nov. 20, 2020, after originally being scheduled for a June 19 premiere.
Sony Pictures Classics has pushed back the sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which will be released on Oct. 7, 2022, instead of April 8, 2022. Sony also bumped the Spider-Man spinoff Morbius to March 19, 2021.
Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson's Saw reboot Spiral took over John Wick: Chapter 4's original release date and will now debut on May 21, 2021.
LucasFilm/Disney has delayed its upcoming trilogy of new Star Wars movies -- originally scheduled for Dec. 16, 2022, Dec. 20, 2024, and Dec. 18, 2026 -- each by a full year.
Even amid widespread lockdowns, Christopher Nolan was set on a full theatrical debut for his newest mind-bending drama, Tenet. The movie's original July release date was pushed back three times, but Warner Bros. finally released the film in the U.S. on Sept. 3.
Paramount's animated adaptation of The Tiger's Apprentice fantasy novels has been pushed back a year to Feb. 19, 2023.
Top Gun: Maverick, Paramount's highly anticipated sequel to Tom Cruise's iconic '80s hit, has been delayed. The movie is now scheduled to debut on July 2, 2021.
Uncharted, starring Tom Holland, has been moved to July 16, 2021.
Steven Spielberg's West Side Story, starring Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler, has been pushed back a year. The anticipated musical is now set to debut on Dec. 10, 2021.
Warner Bros. has pushed back the release of Wonder Woman 1984 to Dec. 25, 2020. The latest move comes after a number of earlier changes to the film's release date.
