Someone put Bortus on the karaoke machine, because it's time to celebrate: The Orville is coming back for Season 3!
The Orville was created by Seth MacFarlane and is essentially his homage to Star Trek. It follows the crew of the USS Orville as they explore the universe in the name of the Planetary Union and discover new species and planets. The show also moves across genres, combining science-fiction, drama, and comedy, sometimes all at the same time.
Fox's 2019-2020 Fall TV Lineup: What You Need to Know
The sci-fi series was one of the last veteran shows Fox made a decision on before it announces its 2019-2020 fall schedule next week, likely because the decision wasn't an easy one for Fox. The Orville requires a bit more heavy lifting than other shows on broadcast television due to special effects, costuming, and character design. Despite being shorter than typical broadcast shows, Season 2 was delayed to late December to allow the production team to finish up special effects.
The renewal is a sign of faith from Fox. After being Fox's fifth-highest rated series in 2017, the show fell to Fox's twelfth-highest rated show in 2018-2019, dropping a full half point in ratings. Though The Orville survived, other genre programming on Fox didn't. The network canceled The Passageand The Gifted, and Gotham aired its final season.
