Sandra Oh Embraces Her Inner Weirdo on Saturday Night Live
"I give my man that good googoo"
It's been a banner year for Sandra Oh, whose stint as co-host of the Golden Globes was a success and resulted in her taking home a trophy for her work in Killing Eve. Ahead of the second season premiere, Oh decided to put her winning streak to work as host for this weekend's new episode of Saturday Night Live, and things got weird in a very wonderful way.
Oh's opening monologue was ordinary enough. She celebrated her successes and admitted to being shy about all the compliments she's been receiving in the wake of it all. She also revealed that it was the one-year anniversary of becoming an American citizen and that she's trying to up her confidence game. She even recruited Leslie Jones to teach her a thing or two about standing tall.
It was the sketches that showcased something new from the esteemed actress, though. In "Future Me," she joined Mikey Day, Alex Moffat, and Beck Bennett as the future girlfriend of a man who's looking at an aged-up version of himself in the mirror and does not like what he sees -- particularly from Tishy, the broken-armed Four Loko-slurping woman he's taken with. If there was ever any doubt that Oh could lean into her zanier side, this should put an end to that.
In another short called "The Duel," which was an obvious riff on Yorgos Lanthimos' The Favourite, she starred as a woman at the center of a feud between two men who are willing to take up arms to squash the conflict, and it was she who suffered the hilarious consequences of their weapons' hair trigger. Who knew how adept she'd be at physical comedy?
Other highlights from Oh's stint as host include her turn as a substitute teacher whose attempts to prep students for the SATs turns into a full-on teen angst expose -- do the first two kids remind anyone else of Angela Chase and Jordan Catalano from My So-Called Life?-- and a digital short about the long-forgotten value of "Cheques."
