Riverdale's Madchen Amick Explains How the Hell Alice Wound Up in a Cult

Alice Cooper (Madchen Amick) is supposed to be one of the most astute characters on Riverdale. She raised Betty (Lili Reinhart), after all! But the second season of The CW drama threw Alice for a real loop when it was revealed that her husband Hal (Lochlyn Munro) was a serial killer. That could really mess up someone's psyche. Enter: the Farm.

The mysterious community that Polly (Tiera Skovbye) joined when she ran away from the Black Hood -- before knowing it was her own dad -- will play a larger role this season. Now that Hal is behind bars, Polly is looping her mom into the Farm's strange ways, and Alice is falling for it hook, line and sinker.

"[Alice] was a completely broken woman. Her entire life broke apart. Everything she had built and what she thought it was, was completely false. Because she was so broken, I think she just [latches] onto something that felt like, 'Oh, yeah, this will heal me.' Of course that's not gonna be a very smooth road," Amick told TV Guide in August at the Television Critics Association summer press tour.

Alice has never been the peacekeeping type. In fact, she's the one most likely to start a fight because she can't ever keep her opinion to herself. The Farm will try and soften that, but it won't be completely effective, thank god.

"It's interesting because she's trying to play this role that she's supposed to play, which is, 'I'm forgiving, and I'm open, and I'm loving, and everything's great,'" Amick explained. "But every time she's tested, she goes right back to old Alice. So you see her actually like, fighting the urge of who she really is and who she's trying to be."

The Farm may think it has its hooks in Alice, but Amick revealed that it's really another Riverdale group that has her heart.

"I think the truth lies in her Serpent past. I think her true self is a rebel," she said. "I think there's something that happened in her childhood that really torments her, and I think that the Serpents felt right at the time. So I see her always running away from Serpent Alice, but I think her true self actually lies within the Serpents."

Hear that? That's the sound of FP (Skeet Ulrich) and Alice fans everywhere losing their cool. Amick said that there's fun times ahead for the couple, especially when it comes to keeping their relationship from Betty and Jughead (Cole Sprouse).

"FP and Alice are definitely keeping things under wraps, because they know it's gonna be uncomfortable," Amick teased. "It is a very uncomfortable situation, but you know, nobody is blood-related! So maybe there's a very awkward moment at a breakfast table. Everybody shows up at the breakfast table, and everything's very awkward, and nobody wants to admit anything."

Honestly, we can't wait.
