John Oliver Sums Up SCOTUS Retirement: "Everything Is Terrible Now"

John Oliver is just as devastated as you are about Justice Kennedy's retirement from the Supreme Court of the United States.

Kennedy revealed last week that he's retiring from his post after 30 years in office, raising concerns that Trump' new pick could potentially reverse the Supreme Court decisions on Roe V. Wade, which legalized access to safe abortions, and Obergefell v. Hodges, which legalized same-sex marriages. Kennedy served as a swing vote and voted in favor both same-sex marriage and Obamacare.

The late night host addressed the major news in his opening segment for Sunday's Last Week Tonight. "For anybody who believes that the Constitution protects things like reproduction and LGBT rights this is bad -- and we know it's bad because Donald Trump Jr. is happy," Oliver said, referencing Trump Jr.'s celebratory tweet on Kennedy's retirement.

"OMG! Just when you thought this week couldn't get any more lit...I give you Anthony Kennedy's retirement from #SCOTUS," Trump tweeted.

Oliver then broke down why the news is alarming for those who are concerned about women's rights and equality for the LGBTQ community, noting that Republicans have majority rule in the Senate. That means Democrats have a steep hill to climb if they intend to preserve the decisions on groundbreaking cases like Roe V. Wade and Obergefell v. Hodges.

"There is a fundamental problem there, and that is that Republicans have 51 seats in the Senate and they need 51 votes to confirm the new justice, so unless Democrats can convince their entire party to oppose the nomination -- and persuade a number of Republicans over to their side -- they are sh-- out of luck," Oliver explained.

On the plus side, this means it's time to play a very important game: Hope Susan Collins Flips And Be Disappointed When She Doesn't. Sen. Collins has publicly stated that she won't vote in favor of a Supreme Court Justice nominee who is willing to overturn Roe v. Wade but also downplayed concerns that reversing the historic decision is under threat by the Trump administration. "It's America's most depressing game show," Oliver said.

Oliver closed out his segment with a bitter dose of reality: We are all screwed.

"I am happy to say here that there is at least some good news, because it turns out that there is a constitutional loophole that allows Democrats to -- I'm obviously lying here, there is no good news. Everything is terrible now," he said, noting that barring a major screw up from Trump, "the only thing everyone can do now is vote."
