The Best Spin-Offs of All Time

Not every spin-off is going to be successful. In fact, most spin-offs are actually very bad, but every once in a while a spin-off comes along that is so good it not only matches the glory of its parent series, but sometimes even outshines or outlasts it. With the return of the Breaking Bad prequel spin-off Better Call Sauljust around the corner (Monday, Aug. 6 at 9/8c), we at TV Guide started thinking about how the downfall of Jimmy McGill (Bob Odenkirk) ultimately fits into the discussion of the all-time great spin-offs.

There are a number of moving parts involved in creating a successful spin-off -- a strong and identifiable leading character who can anchor a series is a must, obviously -- but a great spin-off must also build off its parents series in a way that both advances the story and themes of the original show but also tells new and engaging stories of its own.
