This problem picture insists that some unlikely duos were meant for each other no matter what society says. Beethoven (Carl Anthony Payne) and Sarah (Stephanie Denise Griffin) grew up together, and though his family is African American and hers is white, bigotry never marred their friendship. After college, the life-long pals team up to launch a successful advertising business and become roommates to share expenses. Although Beethoven is attracted to Sarah, he doesn't share her optimism about mixed-race couples, even though Sarah manages to charm a roomful of Beethoven's pals in the middle of a "white devils" rant. Beethoven defies his own better judgment and decides to date Sarah. Beethoven's male pals have always told him to follow his heart and deal with the consequences, but the consequences of dating Sarah make Beethoven wonder whether he shouldn't have stuck to his cautious guns. Some of the firm's snooty clients withdraw their business when they realize Beethoven and Sarah are an item, and one wealthy white executive begins courting Sarah. Worn out from dealing with Beethoven's emotional issues, Sarah can't muster the energy to fight for their relationship. Only after Beethoven has lost Sarah does he realize what he's sacrificed by giving in to societal pressure. He tries to win her back, but with all that's happened he's fighting an uphill battle. This earnest love story has less depth than HAIRSPRAY (1988), but does come down on the side of such undeniable virtues as trusting your feelings rather than your fears.
