Romantic Comedy Reviews

Bernard Slade's adaptation of his own play is neither romantic nor very comedic. Two writers, Jason (Dudley Moore) and Phoebe (Mary Steenburgen), team up and do a bunch of plays together. Jason has a wife, Allison (Janet Eilber), and Phoebe marries Leo (Ron Liebman). Nevertheless, throughout their nine-year professional collaboration, the writers have an on-again, off-again romantic interest in one another and are caught in an unresolved conflict. ROMANTIC COMEDY came and went so quickly that it was barely noticed. Moore had just appeared in two bombs, SIX WEEKS and LOVESICK, and this made three in a row. Design and photography get good marks, but the weak script and storyline sink the movie.
