Set against a backdrop of Britain's troubles with Cyprus in the late 1950s, this film features Bogarde as a British intelligence agent tracking down a terrorist leader. Strasberg is an American archeology student visiting friends who, she unwittingly discovers, are hiding the terrorist, Chakiris. Bogarde believes she knows where Chakiris is hiding, but she refuses to tell. However, Chakiris presumes she has revealed his whereabouts and threatens to kill her. Fearing for her life, Strasberg hides out in Bogarde's apartment, where the pair fall in love. But when British intelligence finds out he is hiding her, they relieve him of his duties and transfer him to Greece. Strasberg follows him there, where they discover that a mysterious man who has been following them is none other than a private detective hired to gather evidence for a divorce by Bogarde's wife. Although this film attempts to show the Cypriot struggle for independence during this time, the plot is too simplistic and never goes deep enough for the audience to analyze the troubles, causes, or attitudes that plagued Cyprus in the late 1950s.
