Kirgiz director Avtandil Adykoulov follows up on his acclaimed first feature The Adopted Son with this understated, fragmented tale about a 17-year old lad coming of age in an economically depressed Central Asian town. The lead character (Mirlan Abdykalykov) is called "the Chimp" by his buddies because of his large, jug-handle ears. Recalling Hou Hsiao Hsien's early autobiographical film The Boys of Fengkuei, this film details how Chimp and his buddies bike around, talk about girls, and generally act like teenaged boys as they kill time before they are called up for military duty. Outside from this, he has a complicated relationship with his demanding girlfriend and his violent, alcoholic father (Dzylkycy Dzakypov). This film was screened at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival.
