Based on a minor 1927 Broadway musical, GOLDEN DAWN is a simplistic story about jungle natives versus white men during WW I. GOLDEN DAWN ranks as a masterpiece of camp. There are a number of plot inconsistencies and some hokey musical numbers. Beery plays in blackface, reflecting the racist attitudes of the studios at that time. This film features a crude Technicolor process which is really a two-strip color technique, giving actors a heavy jaundiced look. Don't miss the tender song "My Bwana" (Oscar Hammerstein II, Emmerich Kalman). Other songs: "Whip Song," "Dawn," "We Too" (Hammerstein, Kalman), "My Heart's Love Call," "Africa Smiles No More," "Mooda's Song," "In a Jungle Bungalow" (Grant Clarke, Harry Akst).
