The Quintero Brothers, two of Spain's best-known playwrights, turned their attentions to the screen in El Agua en el Suelo (Water on the Ground). Maruchi Fresno stars as a good-hearted young girl whose main purpose in life is to brighten the existence of those less fortunate. She is encouraged in these efforts by local priest Jose Calle, who regards Fresno as a sister. Capricious poet Nicholas Navarro publishes a double-entrendre verse which suggest that the priest's interest in the girl is sexual. Though they've done nothing wrong, Fresno and Calle decide that it's best to sever their relationship. Years later, Fresno meets Navarro, forgives him his sins, and introduces the reckless poet to the equally forgiving Calle.
