Big News Reviews

Early talkie newspaper drama featuring Armstrong as a tough reporter who is fired when he goes after gangster Hardy, who happens to be a big advertiser in the Courier. Armstrong continues investigating the crook on his own and comes up with solid evidence that proves Hardy guilty of murder. The city editor, Sellon, reinstates his ace reporter on the strength of the evidence, but Hardy overhears the conversation and when Armstrong leaves the mobster kills the editor, making it appear that the reporter did it. All turns out well in the end when it is discovered that the entire murder has been recorded on the editor's dictaphone. Sound is used to good advantage, highlighting Armstrong's talent for spitting out rapid-fire dialog, the constantly clacking typewriters in the newspaper office, and the key element that saves the hero, a device that records sound.
