When the body of a seventeen-year-old teenager is found in an alley, Detective Lennie Briscoe and his partner Jesse Detective Ed Green are assigned to investigate the case and soon they capture the psychopath Mark Bruner. Jack McCoy and Serena Southerlyn are assigned to prosecute the killer and soon they learn that his public defender is feeling uncomfortable with Mark and refuses the case. Defense attorney Tim Schwimmer accepts the case that will be his first one. Soon McCoy and Serena learn that Schwimmer knows where the corpses of fifteen of his victims are and they ask Schwimmer to disclose the information to give peace to the relatives and friends of the victims. But he refuses claiming attorney-client privilege and the D.A. Arthur Branch decides to prosecute Schwimmer.

When the body of a man is found tied on the bed of a cheap motel room with his skull fractured by an ashtray, Briscoe and Green are assigned to the case. Soon they find that the man was a bounty hunter that was hunting down a notorious serial-killer. Their further investigation shows that the mediocre black journalist Brian Kellogg had interviewed the killer and now is awarded and famous but refuses to give further information. But Briscoe and Green find a means to arrest him. McCoy and Serena prosecute him, but his defense lawyer Randolph J. 'Randy' Dworkin tries to divert the jury claiming racism to the case.

Several witnesses saw a man pull her from her SUV and have three of them picked the carjacker out of a line up, so the case is open and shut. The real problem is the container of medical waste they find in the SUV containing the SARS virus. The dead woman was a lab tech in a university research project and the project director, Dr. Charles Blanchard, suggests she may have been a terrorist. When a woman and her son are diagnosed SARS, the police soon learn however that Blanchard and the woman, Jeanine Wilson, had been having an affair. She's convinced that Blanchard tried to kill her and he's charged with murder. Doubt arises when it turns out Jeanine had been to Blanchard's lab just a few weeks before she fell ill.

Soon they also identify the victim, the aspiring actress Carrie Gunderson, that had spent the night with Myers at a play and drinking later. But their further investigation shows that the home invasion was staged by Ms. Dalton. Myers is brought to the police station and asks for the presence his psychiatrist, Dr. Frederick Barrett. McCoy and Serena prosecute him, and his defense lawyer enters a plea of insanity. But soon they learn there was a relationship between Barret and Carrie and the unbalanced Myers was manipulated by his psychiatrist. What will happen next?

It begins to make sense when they figure out that the dead man had in fact stolen the real Lonnie Jackson's identity by using information he found on him on the Internet. He then proceeded to sell Lonnie's house. The real Lonnie is an 80 year-old African-American who worked hard all of his life and who suddenly finds himself homeless and is ashamed of the situation he now finds himself in. He's alienated from his son, Dr. Paul Jackson, who hires his father a lawyer who seeks to have Lonnie declared incompetent and therefore unable to be prosecuted.

When he is arrested, and when they try to find the gun he used, his lawyer claims that someone broke into his home, possibly the police, and took the gun. Eventually they learn it was the Feds who broke in and they were using a secret warrant because the man's business is being investigated for selling items to countries that they're prohibited to sell certain things to. And when he is tried, his lawyer cries outrage over the secretive nature they operated under.

The forensic evidence suggests that someone other than Anders pushed his way into Glaser's apartment and they find a link to a white supremacist record producer.

Homicide Squad Detectives Lennie Briscoe and Ed Green investigate the death of Brendan Donner, a New York City baseball fan who went after a still-in-play foul ball during a crucial game. He's been hounded by irate fans ever since and it even led to the break up of his marriage. Someone broke a liquor over his head in a bar and fingerprints lead them to Walter Grimes, someone who was released from from prison just three months ago. Grimes had been released after 20 years in prison when DNA exonerated from the crime for which he had been convicted. There's little doubt that he committed the crime but his defense lawyer Rodney Fallon argues that it was his lengthy incarceration, for a crime he did not commit that conditioned him to be violent. McCoy tells the detectives to look into Grimes past for any criminal activity and they start with the crime for which he spent 20 years in jail.

Serena is brought in and has to convince a judge to let them do an autopsy. But because the wife doesn't want it, the judge is inclined to lean in that direction. But Serena finds a loophole which allows them to let them do an autopsy. And the autopsy reveals the man was killed; he was smothered. And since the wife was the one who didn't want the autopsy to be done, they look at her. But they learn she stood to gain nothing. So they look at his children. They learn that the son who's running the family's business which is caviar, into the ground. But they later find evidence that leads them to the man's daughter. They learn that the father mistreated the daughter and was asking her to leave his home. They try to prosecute her but some of their evidence was privileged so they have to find other evidence.
