Sam's fit to practise case reaches court. Among the witnesses called is Sam's old army colleague Ian Dean (later renamed Iain). Keith is taken to ED with possible renal failure. Jean follows on. Following an argument with a woman passenger, injured and furious Mark Burnton in his red BMW knocks down schoolboy Jake Fisher. Both parties are admitted to ED. The woman passenger, Mark's fiancée Keeley, visits him and is dismissive about his injury. Jake's dad Terry recognises Mark as the driver who knocked down his son but is reluctant to speak up in case of retribution. Nick does tests and tells Keith he has cancer and only a fifty percent chance of survival. The tests also reveal new information about Keith's neck. Mark has admitted the hit and run to the police. Terry confronts him and he says sorry and asks to say sorry to Jake when he's recovered. His apologies are accepted. Mark's injury is, as we've deduced, caused by abusive fiancée Keeley who bottled him in the neck prior to the hit and run. He dumps Keeley. She then blames and assaults Zoe but is pulled off by Dixie, Jeff and security gents. Zoe presents the court with the new medical evidence about Keith's cancer diagnosis also revealing a weakness in his neck which would have necessitated less force than normal to break it. Ian goes back to duty. Sam's kiss reveals they were more than buddies. Keith is reconciled with his mother. Sam is cleared.
