Episode 1

Entry Wounds

All staff are sent to the ED (Emergency Department) when 3 victims of a shooting arrive. Then there are reports that Holby College is under fire from the same gunman. The staff are scrambled to help the incoming victims from the College. Full length feature episode.

Episode 2

The Blame Game

The ED gets bad press over their handling of the shooting. A young boy fails at an attempt to blow up his racist grandfather with a grenade. He tries again in the ED with a second grenade. The pin is pulled and the grandfather quickly holds his hands over the grenade. The bomb squad arrives.

Episode 3

Chaos Theory

Ruth Winters (Georgia Taylor) is concerned about the lack of intimacy from her new husband Edward. Nick Jordan orders two hour turnaround time in the ED. A dozen students from the same school are admitted with LSD overdoses.

Episode 4

Only the Lonely

The new and improved unit opens. Ruth cannot figure out why husband Edward is avoiding her at home.

Episode 5

Into the Fog

Lenny has misdiagnosed a patient. More bad publicity for the ED. The hygiene inspection starts. An insider is exposed as the mole.

Episode 6

Eliminate the Negative

When the newspaper tells a story of a badly run ED (Emergency Department), Jordan sets out to change public opinion.

Reasons Unknown

The whole story of the shooting at Holby College is told through the memories of the shooter and the victims.

Episode 8

Employee of the Week

Charlie has a bad day when baby Megan is abandoned to him. Ruth is shocked by why husband Edward is distant, and finds out that Charlie also knows. Employee of the week is causing so much confusion in the ED as the staff are competing for Ruth's attention. Kirsty is becoming increasing stressed by her husband's abuse.

Episode 9

No Place Like Home

Kirsty is exhausted by her husband's constant need for attention and takes pills to help her get through her shift. The inspection is coming in 2 weeks and Jordan is trying hard to get his staff in line.

Episode 10

Hands On

The inspector arrives. Jay's grandmother is admitted, unfortunately, Jay has told her he is a doctor. Jordan is forced to do surgery in the ED even though he is not supposed to. He threatens to resign if it will help the ED to stay open.

Episode 11

The Enemy Within

Ruth's quiet time home alone is disturbed when her husband Edward and handsome young surgeon James enter the house and, believing they are alone, kiss, then go upstairs to bed. At a loose end pending the hearing regarding his reinstatement as an active paramedic, Jeff spends all the story hanging out in the ambulance with the girls. He's one staff member who receives good news. Ruth also finds out that her husband's lover has been given the job promotion she was interviewed for, and in a conversation with Charlie, realises he also knows about Edward's sexuality and gets him transferred to a different department.

Episode 12

Guilty Secrets

The staff try to get Charlie reinstated. Lenny's long lost sister contacts him. She needs a donor for a bone marrow transplant.

Episode 13

Truth Will Out

Kirsty's unpleasant, abusive and irresponsible husband Warren causes Casualty Car Crash 255 with their young daughter Nita on board. Future trouble is ensured when Warren notes that Nita has met Mr lover man Adam Trueman on a previous occasion not disclosed by his wife and obviously thinks he's wonderful. The department is under inspection by sexy woman Fraser Beaumont who is very impressed with Ruth's efficiency and medical skills - and rather surprised to hear that Ruth is married to gay gentleman Edward Thurlow. Other patients include an autistic boy with a mother who's got him on tons of absolutely useless alternative medication.

Episode 14

Grandiosity

Jeff returns to work. Ruth gives the staff the results of the time and motion study. Lenny's sister meets his colleagues.

Episode 15

What Lies Beneath

Jeff comes to the rescue when Joe is being harassed by a gang of teenagers. Lenny is not a match for his sister's transplant and avoids telling her.

Episode 16

Season of Goodwill

Lenny is in an extreme state of anxiety because he's not a transplant match for his sister. Casualty Car Crash 256 is actually a motorcycle swerving to avoid a small girl who is later taken out of the department by a man with previous convictions against children. It transpires he's a possible match for Lenny's sister's bone marrow. Kirsty's husband Warren is admitted where Adam diagnoses him with muscular dystrophy, the prognosis being he'll be confined to a wheelchair in no time at all. Kirsty, previously believing Warren's ailments to be fictitious and keen to become Adam's lover, nevertheless pledges to care for her husband. Warren, however, intercepts a mobile phone message to Adam; interprets it correctly and punches her in the stomach. Nick is back and is angry with Ruth for various faults and errors - but mainly for getting Charlie moved out of the department.

Episode 17

Winter Wonderland

It is Christmas time again, and Ruth and Kirsty are especially tense and irritable hoping for one that's not affected by the relationship and health issues with their husbands. A drug addict is instructed to fire bomb a derelict pub to pay off his dope debt unaware it's being used as a squat by a woman with a new born baby. Ruth has the misfortune to be assisted by her husband's lover James and a patient nearly dies due to his administering the wrong medication. An old dear is curious to know if anyone is familiar with the anecdote about the 'Lady From Ealing'. Even when the drug addict takes her hostage with a knife at her throat, Ruth keeps her cool. Edward Thurlow makes an announcement to the department regarding his choice of partner. It's goodbye from him - and it's goodbye from him.

Episode 18

All the Time in the World

Nick Jordan drives without a licence and gets in a collision. The police want to blame him for the accident, but later find out it was a stalker who was following a woman's car. Kirsty has more noticeable injuries on her. Ruth misplaces her book and blames the staff for stealing it.

Episode 19

Epiphany

Nick Jordan is kidnapped by someone who was in the car crash. Kirsty gets an exam for her injuries. Warren confronts Adam about Kirsty's whereabouts. When Kirsty finds out Warren was looking for her, she rushes home only to be greeted by a very volatile Warren.

Episode 20

Altered States

Ruth gets to work in a state of partial amnesia and with bruises having spent the evening at a club. Nick has his promotion interview so puts her in charge while he hits the textbooks. A man comes home after a night on the razzle where his wife hobbles him in the hope of keeping him there, but he's admitted to Emergency Department where Ruth recognises him from the night before. Singer Tanita Tikaram's brother Ramon plays an alcoholic who's convinced his wife but not his daughter he's quit the booze. Charlie organises a brain scan for Nick. He gets his promotion.

Episode 21

Choose Your Illusion

A mentally challenged girl comes into the ED. Ruth tries to help, but it is not her case. She gets obsessed with the girl and takes her to a private room to treat her. Everyone is searching for her. They find them and the police are called. Ruth is taken away.

Episode 22

A Lion Roars

Adam awakes from a night on his sofa to find Kirsty has vacated the bedroom. She's returned home and bedded down with daughter Nita. She makes plans to leave Warren. Nick asks for donations for some sort of gift for Ruth, now confined to the mental health unit. Two villains, one of whom is a junkie, injure a woman police officer while hi-jacking her car then discover her baby's on board. The woman asks an acquaintance to retrieve her lost valuable 'documents'. He's actually the father of her child - but she is reluctant to let him to know this. Other patients include pupils and a male teacher from a special school with upset stomachs. One girl seems especially fond of the teacher. The car thieves demand a ransom for the baby, who's given orange juice laced with Methadone to stop him crying. Kirsty's escape plan backfires when Warren finds her passport she hid earlier. His latest attack ends with him unconscious at the foot of the stairs.

Episode 23

Place of Safety

Irony rears its ugly head as Charlie, whom she had relocated to the psych unit, is one of Ruth's nurses in her confinement. Game For A Laugh presenter Matthew Kelly appears as a surprisingly plausible shrink. Ruth's rehabilitation regime includes taking up smoking; reliving the treatment of a former patient with Munchausen's; using the laundry chute to gain access to the chapel; sex and watching Strictly Come Dancing.

Episode 24

Duty of Care

A Royal princess is admitted with serious injuries. Henrik Hanssen (Guy Henry) and Nick Jordan (Michael French) Argue about the best way to treat her. Who will save her life and get the glory? Jay is stressed over who to visit, his grandmother or Ruth . His choice has consequences.

Episode 25

Til Death Us Do Part

Warren is in a coma. Jordan gloats over his gift, and Henrik takes revenge on him. Jordan recklessly splashes a woman at a bus stop who ends up making his day a misery. A woman is bleeding out and won't allow a transfusion for religious reasons. Jordan and Turner disagree on this. Jay has a health concern.

Episode 26

Boys Will Be Boys

Kirsty asks Adam to lie to the police for her. A victim attacks his mugger and they both end up in the ED. When Jay discovers that the mugger is in Lenny's care, he goes after him. The victim has something to hide and won't press charges. Jay misses his doctor's appointment. Miriam Turner examines Jay and accompanies him to a specialist.

Episode 27

Less than Zero

Warren has died. A persistent policewoman asks Kirsty and Adam about events leading up to his staircase descent. His daughter Nita cadges a ride with a woman who's robbed her boss/lover and the woman's psychologically challenged brother who's frequently in need of comfort breaks. En route they stop to collect the woman's mother but she has died. The robbed boss/lover and his heavies try to force entry to the house which makes the brother panic and fatally injure his sister while Nita falls from a drainpipe trying to make her escape. Other patients include a man whose injuries Lenny thinks - or is desperate to believe - were caused by a letter bomb (he doesn't convince Mads) and a teenage girl hit by a car. Jokers Noel and Big Mac believe Jay and Miriam are lovers. Jay is visited by his granny who provides inedible pastries. Lenny's hypothesis turns out to be correct - except that the victim is the sender not the recipient. Adam asks Nita for a serious discussion. She runs again but Adam catches her deleting a phone confession that she pushed her father down the stairs.

Episode 28

Only Human

Nick is set to interview new doctors - Miriam has just the right candidate: Dylan Keogh, whose phone ringtone is "Reach For The Stars" by S Club 7. He agrees to attend, but travels on a bus where the driver loses consciousness causing Casualty Car Crash 261. A small boy with apparently superhuman strength who identifies with The Incredible Hulk lifts the driver from his seat and carries him to safety. A wedding planner woman passenger gets back on the bus, and while she looks under the seat for a mislaid item Casualty Car Crash 262 occurs when a car driver drops his lighted ciggie and T bones the bus while he looks for it. The errant cigarette causes a fire and massive explosion but Dylan manages to extricate the injured woman who has suffered severe facial disfigurement. Jay has his testicular ultrasound examination. He also phones Ruth and asks if he can visit. Ruth escapes from the psych unit and goes shopping. Charlie discovers she's not been taking her medication. When her numerous credit cards are declined in a toy shop, she takes refuge in a Wendy house. Charlie comes to find her. She's maxed her cards buying six fridge freezers to furnish her and Jay's imaginary home. Dylan gets the bus driver's medical records which explain his blackouts. The strong young boy actually has cancer. So does Jay. Dylan gets the job.

Episode 29

Secrets and Lies

Jay is scheduled for surgery. A young girl walks into the ED and starts to convulse. Her drug dealer boyfriend shows up tries to take her home and she collapses in the parking lot. Jay may miss his surgery because of this. Mads agrees to a date with Lenny. Miriam breaks patient confidentiality.

Episode 30

Just Because You're Paranoid

Hannah Fleet returns to the ED for treatment. Dylan rubs the staff the wrong way. A colleague of Ruth's takes her out for lunch. Charlie tells Ruth she may be bipolar. Dylan confronts a lawyer who is passing out his business cards in the waiting room.

Episode 31

Starting Over

Polly is anxious about her forthcoming paramedic exam. Jay comes in wearing a large colourful sombrero to give credibility to his cover story of being on holiday while actually having his testicular cancer operation. Mads tells Lenny a white lie about why she broke her date with him. A young male nurse at a care home catches a female senior carrying out a definitely dodgy transaction. The male nurse's charge just happens to be Jay's granny who falls off the lavatory while he's doing his detective bit. He brings her in where, totally unethically, she's treated by Jay who later attacks the male nurse for being inattentive. Tess suspends Jay. An old woman living in a massive ancient mansion is troubled by a conglomeration of travellers who have massed on common land nearby. The old dear is brought in by one of the travellers and his daughter when she suffers an electrical shock while trying to disconnect their illegal electricity supply. Ironically, Lenny and Mads have to defibrillate to revive her. Poppy talks to scarred Hannah Fleet who's been told it'll be a year before she can have reconstructive surgery - Poppy talks to Dr Hilary Oppe about speeding things up. Mads and Lenny do a little flirting. The traveller and daughter mount a vigil by the old lady's bed having gained entry to her house to bring her a change of clothes. She's not grateful and has a relapse - Adam, Lenny and Mads carry out an emergency procedure. The care home senior female nurse blackmails her junior but he collapses en route to steal Tess's drug cupboard key. Miriam and Jay work to save him. He tells Jay what he witnessed his superior doing. Jay's gran has also sussed what the nurse is doing and she assists in bringing her to justice. Hannah has a counselling session with Dr Oppe assisted by Polly. Turns out the big house old woman has been served an eviction notice - but this is something the traveller definitely can help her fight. Polly tells Dixie and Jeff she wants to be a counsellor not a paramedic. Mads heads off to Pakistan for a wedding.

Episode 32

A Real Shame

Jay finds out his results and pays a visit to Ruth, but can't tell her why he has not visited. An underage girl gets drugged in a bar. A man comes in with a rare hormone imbalance. Jordan and Miriam are competing to win Clinical Head. The staff decide who gets the job.

Episode 33

Before the Fall

In an episode centring on Kirsty and her late husband Warren's meeting and early relationship, their daughter Nita climbs a tower at her father's former fire station with a supply of vodka and threatens to jump unless her story is told. Kirsty climbs up there to talk her down. Events covered are Warren's use of violence and the lies he told about injuries received in the line of duty; Kirsty's unplanned pregnancy, where the meaningful looks of recognition when Kirsty and Miriam set eyes on each other in an earlier episode are explained by Miriam being top dog in the natal unit; Kirsty and Warren's fears their premature child Nita may have cerebral palsy. Nita reveals that her father died because he punched her in the stomach then, in a fit of remorse, requested she push him down the stairs. She and her mother come down safely. Polly's attempt at a change of career direction doesn't go as she hoped; and Hannah Fleet returns seeking help having burned her arm with boiling water. Hoping and imagining they have a connection because he saved her life she requests, and is allocated, Dr Keogh who treats her but makes clear by his attitude their relationship is purely professional. A showdown takes place in a store room where Dylan, let down by his dog-sitter, is hiding his beloved Dervla from the powers that be, where Polly finds and threatens to report him, and Hannah also tracks him down. She does more self-harm and Dylan patches her up again. He then makes a break for the elevator leaving an angry Hannah to stab Polly with a knife and run away. In her pocket she finds an item gifted to her earlier. It may save her life.

Episode 34

Momentum

Hannah Fleet, now completely deranged, drags critically wounded Polly to a storeroom and locks her in saying she'll get Dylan Keogh. She also takes and hides Polly's phone. Polly has Dylan's dog Dervla for company. Dylan makes excuses and walks away when Hannah finds him. Zoe treats the self inflicted wounds to Hannah's arm. Other patients include a man named after The Cars' late bassist and vocalist, Orr, who's sustained a serious head injury in an incident with a male and a female cop; and a young man under pressure to pass exams with a girlfriend he finds overly attentive. Miriam is suspicious about the supposed crowbar injury the male cop received from Mr Orr and asks Dylan to see if he agrees. Miriam and Nick anxiously await The Board's decision on which of them gets the Clinical Lead job. A couple of suits hang around observing them in action. Tallest cast member Henrik Hanssen tells Miriam not to be discouraged by Nick's arrogant and authoritarian attitude. Zoe gets Dylan and Hannah in the same space but she won't confess to what she's done unless he concedes the two of them have "a connection" - which he refuses to do. Big Mac walks along Polly's corridor to listen to racing results on his radio using earplugs so doesn't hear Polly's cries for help. He does however hear Dervla the dog bark, but Dylan appears and tells him he must be imagining it. The two cops are seen talking conspiratorially - the woman's attitude, she being the junior, appears to be one of reluctance to collude in a story of events. Mr Orr's formidable older sister arrives and is alarmed to hear her brother apparently received his injuries while breaking and entering as he's barely capable of dressing himself. It transpires that Mr Orr was apprehended by plod while attempting entry to his sister's house possibly having lost his keys; it was the rookie woman who used excessive force, and her colleague is offering to conspire with her in a cover up so she may keep her job. Dylan and Zoe both try calling Polly's phone but naturally there's no reply. Hannah's meant to be with a psych counsellor but has gone walkabout. Dylan and Zoe find Polly's phone hidden in Hannah's bed. Jay offers advice to the young man with mysterious pains of no origin: he is afraid to admit to his experienced girlfriend that he's a virgin. Hannah reappears; Dylan confronts her; she pulls her knife and makes a run for it but is caught by the cops. Dylan sends Jay to the storeroom where he finds critically wounded Polly who keeps herself alive by telling Jay his problem is not realising it's Ruth he loves. Jay fetches Dylan, Dixie and Jeff who take her to resus but it's too late for Nick and the team to save her. Henrik tells Miriam the Clinical Lead job is hers - she tells him the staff will want Nick.

Episode 35

Deception

A pick pocket gets chased down, falls, and breaks the cast on her leg. Lenny and Jay cut the cast off to find her foot is infected and the cast should have been taken off months ago. She is using a missing girl's identity. Miriam's step-grandson comes looking for her. There is a floral memorial for Polly in front of the hospital. Miriam forfeits the job to Jordan.

Episode 36

A Quiet Life

Ruth starts back at the ED. Mads comes back from Pakistan with an engagement ring. Lenny is not happy about it. A boy comes in with stomach pains, and a woman gets hit by a motorcycle. Mads drinks with the staff at the pub and goes off alone in a taxi.

Episode 37

When the Bough Breaks...

Tess is still upset over the death of the boy and starts drinking. An infant is left home alone and the social worker breaks in. The teen aged father grabs the baby and goes to meet the baby's mother at the train. Henry tries to make Tess the scapegoat for the death of Daniel. A young man finds out about Polly and grieves with Jeff. Charlie comes back to work.

Episode 38

The Gift of Life

The taxi driver who attacked Mads ends up in the ED with stab wounds in his face. A boy is forced to throw bricks at passing trucks on the highway, causing the death of a driver. Everyone is shocked (especially his wife) to find out he had a human cargo of 13 people in the back. Linda Andrews starts work in the unit today. Adam lies to the widow to get his organs for transplant.

Episode 39

One Good Day

Linda wakes up with a lover called Kevin who's a strip a gram cop. Zoe asks Dylan to come back. Tess is back. New locum Simon Roper and Linda have history. Joe, a young boy at the scene of Casualty Car Crash 265 calls emergency services. Noted by Dylan, Joe stumbles while saving a dog from one of the crashed cars. The boy is having sightings of his father, William, although he's been told he's dead. His mother thinks these are illusions, but the man arrives in E.D. with deluded ravings about conspiracy theories. Dylan tells Zoe he believes the boy may have Guillain-Barre Syndrome. In a Watch This Space moment, Zoe addresses Dylan as "Rain Man". Linda treats William who believes his condition may be medical not psychiatric. Turns out William faked his death in a train crash. Dylan crashes the department and tries to persuade Zoe and Simon his diagnosis about Joe is correct; but information from Simon makes him change his diagnosis to acute intermittent porphyia. He's bounced out by security. He re-crashes, finds Linda chilling in her office and tells her to put her shoes on and find Joe's urine sample. She can only find Joe's father's sample, which will suffice as the condition is hereditary. Simon is insisting on sending Joe for an operation, but his mum admits that Warren is Joe's dad. Linda proposes in future they use the Rapid Assessment Triage system whereby a senior doctor sees every new patient. This gets the thumbs up. Simon leaves humiliated, and bitter with Linda. Dylan eavesdrops, and Linda reveals they were once engaged to be married. She gets Kevin to do his strip a gram cop routine on Big Mac. Dylan agrees to come back.

Episode 40

Keep on Running: Part 1

Part 1. Adam has a difference of opinion with Dr. Klein. Adam sends an elderly patient home where he dies. Jeff tries to pick up with Karl where Polly left off. He finds out that Karl is the cousin of the Holby College shooter and has the same intentions.

Episode 41

Keep on Running: Part 2

Karl goes to Holby College where old mate Zac isn't pleased to see him; Jeff then tracks him down there returning mobile phones he stole prior to his cousin's killing spree. A man walks into E.D. and collapses on the floor vomiting blood. Linda knows him and has seen it all before; Jay also thinks he's a time waster, but Tess is concerned and Dylan orders a full set of observations. When these come back all clear he glugs ipecac to induce vomiting but this has serious repercussions. After some awkward questions, Ruth is signed off the psych unit and returns to work. At the college, a mummy's girl and girlfriend of Zac collapses after glugging vodka. Karl finds her, believes it's a stroke, comforts her and calls Jeff who brings her into E.D. where Zac spills the beans to mum that he and the girl have been bonking for a year; she's on the pill and a smoker. Ruth leads treatment but nerves make her unable to operate. Jeff blames Dylan for Polly's death. Karl and Zac have a balcony showdown - Jeff talks Karl down.

Episode 42

Rogue

A rapist gets attacked and thrown through a window by the father of the girl. They both end up in the ED. The father attempts to kill him again. Adam stops him. The ED is overcrowded and Linda can't take the pressure. A patient writes a blog about how inept the ED is.

Episode 43

Divine Intervention

A man with cancer has a car accident, and has a DNR order in place. Adam decides to recussitate him against his wishes. Dylan is bored with the common complaints and asks only to be called if someone has an unusual ailment. Adam continues to spiral out of control.

Episode 44

Pascal's Wager

A pharmacist gets attacked by thugs. Mads gets accosted by her attacker outside her apartment. Dylan lets an underage girl sleep in his houseboat and finds her unconscious in the morning. Mads confides in Lenny about her attacker and he takes her to the police.

Episode 45

System Error

Casualty Car Crash 267 involves a builder with a relationship crime history, his girlfriend and the girlfriend's teenage daughter. A reverend is taken ill at a massage parlour where his daughter works. An unruly schoolboy hits Kirsty. Loose cannon Adam's career is on the line as Nick requests his old notes.

Episode 46

When You're Smiling

A man, Paul Reaney, out walking with his young son Connor, is stabbed apparently by a stranger. Nick oversees when Adam treats a woman injured in a car crash not included in Casualty's Car Crash list because it occurs off screen. Donna, a woman getting in shape for a parachute jump gets a head injury falling from a climbing wall at a gymnasium. Relationship criminal Matthew Haddon falls down stone steps after a visit from plod. Old lovers Kirsty and Adam work together treating a man who made a bad choice of tattooist. Haddon asks to be treated by Adam who finds he's doubled up on the libido suppressant Adam prescribed and this has caused liver damage. Donna tells Kirsty she is sure she has a hereditary condition which killed her mother and sister. Kirsty gets it checked by Zoe who confirms her fears. Big Mac researches stabbing victim Reaney and finds he's a lawyer who got a drink driver off jail after killing a small girl. Matthew goes walkabout - Adam finds him collapsed; admits the truth to Kirsty and asks her to collude with him in a cover up to save his career. Instead, she resigns and drives across the Severn Bridge with daughter Nita. Donna does her parachute jump.

Episode 47

Thanks for Today

An explosion at Holby Airport. Mads finds her injured attacker in the rubble and punches him in the chest. A witness to this, reports it to the news channel and it goes viral that a nurse punched an unconscious victim. When he gets to the hospital, Lenny refuses to help him despite orders from Jordan and Adam. He finally blurts out in the ED that that man tried to rape Mads. When Mads is questioned by Linda, we find out that the "punch" was actually a heart starting thump and she saved his life. He was at the airport to jump bail for his attack on Mads using his brother's passport. He is arrested and his wife leaves him.
