These characters were bringing some ~fire~
There've been a lot of hookups, breakups, and romantic declarations to happen with the many characters in One Chicago's shows, although few have withstood the pressures of those high-stress occupations they all have. Even so, it's hard not to have some favorites among the love connections we've witnessed on Chicago P.D., Chicago Fire, and Chicago Med, so let's take a look back at the very best 'ships to ever happen with Chicago's finest.
Their fling might've been brief and based on some major lies on her part, but the ferocity of Severide's physical connection with the house's temporary payroll clerk made for some serious highlights reel hotness.
Okay, okay, so Matt Casey's rekindled romance with ex-fiancee Hallie Thomas (Teri Reeves) meant he wasn't spending as much time with Gabby Dawson as "Dawsey" 'shippers might've liked, but there was still something sweet and earnest about what they had together. So, it felt pretty cheap when her fate became nothing more than a cheap plot device for a couple of episodes before he moved on. Groan.
Even the Team Halstead faithful have to admit that the two had some serious screen sizzle when they hooked up on Chicago P.D., even if they did just keep it to a passionate kiss.
It took a long time for Connor Rhodes (Colin Donnell) and Ava Bekker (Norma Kuhling) to bring those big beautiful brains together, and while their stubbornness and commitment to patient care got in the middle of their romantic relationship, they were still pretty sharp screen partners. Perhaps they'll find their happily ever after now that they're both staging an exit from Chicago Med.
One Chicago's crossover episodes never took the storied history of Severide (Taylor Kinney) and April (Yaya DaCosta) too far, but the two did rekindle the romance ever so briefly and proved that if they ever were to go all-in with a romantic adventure, it'd be absolutely show-stopping.
Even if theirs was just a stepping stone romance before Chicago Med could get Hallstead to his flagship relationship with Manning, his short-lived relationship with Dr. Nina Shore (Patti Murin) was still kind enough to stomach while we all waited for the real deal.
Before she could figure out that she wasn't meant for the world of pathology, Sarah Reese (Rachel DiPillo) had a delightfully quirky connection with fellow nerd Joey Thomas (Peter Mark Kendall), who just kinda ... disappeared but still left his mark.
Severide might not seem like the marrying kind, but he did try to settle down in Sin City in the wake of Shay's death, with a woman he met at the craps table named Brittany. Although that quickie wedding might've easily been a disaster for everyone involved, their marriage, although short, was actually pretty cute and revelatory about what really drove each to the altar to begin with.
When these two were on, they were on, but the ex-NFL star wanted to move things way too far, way too quickly for their relationship to last. To his credit, he was hardly the burly football stud she might've expected him to be, and she als found a deep connection with his son, Eric. But surviving a miscarriage and his insistence that she didn't need the job she loved still spelled disaster from the start.
Connor Rhodes' relationship with Robin (Mekia Cox) was considerate and serious and filled with some undeniable eye candy. Sure, theirs was not a story with a happy ending, but it was fun while it lasted.
One particularly rough night on the job brought Adam Ruzek and Hailey Upton together and they've been a pretty solid pairing ever since. Their unexpected romance might be divisive among the One Chicago family --many believe Upton is harboring secret feelings for Jay Halstead and that Ruzek isn't fully over Kim Burgess --but there's no denying that chemistry. And after evolving their relationship from secret hookups to a fully-fledged love affair, it's clear that this pair is here to stay.
You gotta give Kelly serious points for going through the hell of a bone marrow donation -- while wide awake, no less -- to save someone he barely knew, but Kelly being Kelly, he couldn't leave it at just that. And Kelly being Kelly, he was successfully at winning her affection. The real marrow that being with Anna brought out of Kelly was his thoughtful and romantic side that fans had rarely seen before. Her loss hurt. A lot.
There's no denying how intensely adorable Ethan (Brian Tee) and April (Yaya DaCosta) are on Chicago Med, even when they do have some difficulties associated with their unequal positions of power around the hospital. They may have broken up but it's only a matter of time before these two find their way back to each other.
Chief Wallace Boden (Eamonn Walker) doesn't let his guard down very often, but when he does, it usually has something to do with his muted, but strong affection for Donna Robbins (Melissa Ponzio). Theirs might not be the kind of torrid romance that heats up the screen every week, but their solidarity and sweetness is still a mainstay of Chicago Fire.
Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer) and Antonio Dawson (Jon Seda)'s crossover romance might've come out of nowhere, but Brettonio has definitely brought some fire to both stations with their intensely passionate and still very sweet, romance. The paramedic may have successfully gotten the detective's myocardium back to full functionality, but their relationship was short-lived. They parted ways after realizing they wanted different things. And Antonio's departure from Chicago P.D. puts the kibosh on any hopes for reconciliation.
Stella (Miranda Rae Mayo) may have quietly waited in the wings as Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) gave other women a shot at his heart -- which, to be fair, was a bit of payback after all his time spent watching her endure an unhappy marriage until he couldn't sit by anymore -- but that was just a testament to how much better she understood him than anyone else who tried to tame the love beast. It did't hurt, of course, that she's just as much of a badass as he is on the field. They might be broken up for now but these kind spirits won't stay apart for much longer.
Chicago Fire's fun-loving Truck 81-er "Mouch" (Christian Stolte) really met his match when he and P.D.'s tough-as-nails Desk Sergeant Trudy Platt (Amy Morton) became an item. The crossover couple might've seemed unlikely -- especially in the days when he trolled GoldenOldeez.com for romantic prospects -- but their endearing relationship has quickly become the most sturdy ship of the shows.
Although she'd later strike something up with her erstwhile partner Roman (Brian Geraghty), Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) and Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) were the realest deal, and everyone knows it. As she starts to more fully examine the things that make her tick on the job, perhaps the Burzek train will get back to chugging along sooner than later.
It took two seasons of wafer-thinly veiled pining for Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) to *finally* admit his romantic feelings for Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto) on Chicago Med, but the wait was so worth it when she finally declared that she, too, had a secret shine for him. Since then, the two have been doing their best to reward all that fan patience with some very tender love scenes between them. And when things get tough for the couple, their long-standing friendship and deep level of respect for one another has still carried them through. Even while broken up, it's clear that their sweet romance is far from over.
Sophia Bush's shocking decision to leave the cast of Chicago P.D. after so many years was probably most painful for those "Linstead" fans who'd long held out hope that she and her one true love Jay Halstead would finally work out their differences and get back together at last because they were basically couple canon (and, let's face it, easy on the eyes).
The pretty. Oh, the pretty Matt Casey (Jesse Spencer) and Gabriela Dawson (Monica Raymund) brought to Firehouse 51. It's not just their sizzling good looks and steamy chemistry that threatened to burn the place down at any given moment, though. They also had some serious intensity, individual ambitions and strength, and integrity to spare. It's too bad their disagreements over how to make a family have now doused many fans' hopes of seeing "Dawsey" make it all the way to the forever finish line. Gulp.
