Upzek Is Sticking Around on Chicago P.D., Whether You Like It or Not

They aren't going away anytime soon

Keisha Hatchett

Ever since Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) and Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) started bumping and grinding on Chicago P.D., the One Chicago fam has been pretty vocal about whether or not they should be hooking up under Voight's (Jason Beghe) nose. While the mere image of these two swapping spit has left most reaching for the puke bucket, others have been more supportive of the sleepover buddies. But for those who feel squeamish about P.D.'s newest couple, I have some bad news for you: Upzek isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

"I don't think it will end soon. I think it's something we'll continue explore and that we continue to be intrigued by," showrunner Rick Eid told TV Guide.

It looks like you're getting way more Upzek in the near future, whether you like it or not. Not only are Upton and Ruzek great friends with benefits, Eid also confirmed that there's "absolutely" a chance they'll progress into something much deeper and more concrete.

Whether or not Ruzek is Upton's next great love remains to be seen, especially since it's clear that at least a part of her still longs for Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) and his piercing baby blues. But Upton isn't one to date a co-worker (Ruzek being the exception) so it's best to consider Halstead uncharted territory for now. But that doesn't mean she'll keep those feelings bottled up forever. Upton will have to tell Halstead how she feels eventually, maybe just not right now.

"I don't know if it's gonna happen sometime soon but [fans] shouldn't give up hope," Eid said.

And while Upton might be hung up on Halstead, Ruzek has since moved on from his ex-fiancé Burgess (Marina Squerciati) and genuinely feels something for Upton. Even after breaking up, Ruzek and Burgess maintain a true friendship that leaves many hoping they'll revisit that epic love sometime soon. According to Eid, however, there's a slim chance you'll see Burzek rise from the ashes in the coming episodes.

"I think romantically, that's not what's going on right now. Ruzek has real feelings for Upton and that's where his focus is," Eid explained. "Ruzek and Burgess have a real friendship and a real relationship but at the moment, it's not romantic."

A great man once said "never give up, never surrender" and I'm inclined to agree. These two might be down for now but they're certainly not out.

Catch Upzek and the rest of the gang in action during Chicago P.D.'s midseason finale which airs Wednesday, Dec. 5 at 10/9c on NBC.
