SVU Exclusive: Oscar Nominee Cicely Tyson Will Guest

Cicely Tyson will guest-star on an upcoming episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, TVGuide.com has learned exclusively. Tyson will play Ondine, a preacher's wife who works with her husband to relocate former child soldiers from Africa to the U.S. to help them escape their violent lives. Benson and Stabler meet Ondine when one of the children is brutally attacked. Ondine's husband has yet to be cast. Tyson is a two-time Emmy winner and earned an Oscar nomination for playing a sharecropper's wife in Sounder (1972). What's Up With Oscar's Best Song Category Anyway?

At the Oscars on Sunday (8 pm/ET, ABC), only three tunes will compete for the Best Song statuette: "Down to Earth" by Peter Gabriel from WALL-E and two songs from Slumdog Millionaire, none of which you had ever heard before they were nominated. How the songs are chosen is notoriously complicated, and the results are always a little suspect. While there have been some legitimate musical masterpieces that have won (Hello, "Moon River"!), it's usually much more random (That Phil Collins dreck from the Tarzan movie over Aimee Mann and South Park? Seriously?). Here's our extremely subjective take on the match-ups through the years — who deserved to win, who pulled a fast one on the Academy and which annoying little ditties will be stuck in your head for hours to come. It's not Gossip Girl here, but we are writing to you from the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Nevertheless, we have to talk: This meeting has been convened because it's time to fix our beloved Gossip Girl. The ratings have dropped to a season low of just 2.2 million, and while many of us are still streaming it with relish, it must be said that creatively, the show is starting to stink like so much day-old smoked salmon. As others warn of the impending death of Gossip Girl, let's see if we can do something to help. Pull up a Chesterfield sofa and partake in the holiday-weekend brunch buffet we've prepared — Mochaccinos for everybody! — remove your platinum cufflinks, roll up your sleeves and let's get to work. Sherry Stringfield Returning to ER

Sherry Stringfield is returning to ER, a source close to the deal has confirmed to TVGuide.com. Stringfield's participation is the latest in a slew of alums who have signed off to send off the show in its final season, a group that already includes Anthony Edwards, Julianna Margulies and George Clooney. Stringfield played Dr. Susan Lewis on NBC's medical drama from 1994-1996 and then returned to the show in 2001 for another four seasons. No word on how Dr. Lewis will reappear this time.

Jessica Lowndes has spun what was scripted as a guest spot in the pilot of CW's 90210 remake (Tuesdays, 8 pm/ET, moves to 9 pm March 3) into a full-time gig. Since then, her character, Adrianna, has been the girl who has had everything: the child-star complex, the drug addiction, the stage mom, the HIV scare and now... the unplanned pregnancy! Chris Brown surrendered to police in a felony battery investigation, skipping his performance at the Grammy Awards on Sunday night, according to People. "He turned himself in around 7 p.m. to one of our stations and is being interviewed by detectives now," LAPD Officer Karen Smith told the magazine. He was booked into the jail and was later released after posting $50,000 bail. Brown is due in court March 5. New episodes of Law & Order: Criminal Intent won't air until summer 2009, according to a USA Network spokesperson, the second such delay in four months. The eighth season was initially scheduled to debut in November 2008, just three months after Season 7 aired. Then, in October, the netlet announced the season would shift to early 2009, presumably January, so they could air all 16 episodes in a row — the same reason they cite for this latest push-back.
