Episode 1

All In?

Thu, May 15, 202543 mins

After being only one of twenty-one teams to secure back-to-back promotions in EFL history, Wrexham AFC this year will be attempting to do what no team has ever done, which is to secure a third consecutive promotion. While many exuberant fans are positive they will do it, team officials are a bit more practical in understanding they are becoming a smaller fish in a bigger pond with each promotion, this first year in League One where their payroll and net worth, for the first time since Rob and Ryan took over, is dwarfed by their league competitors. The same can be said about their administrative and physical infrastructure including the stadium. The off season also brings change, some which they control in that wanted growth, but some which they don't control. Both the men and women's teams having exhibition matches up and down the North American west coast will provide exposure in many different ways, especially for the women who have never played outside Wales. Meanwhile, Humphrey, stemming from a somewhat off-the cuff comment, is goaded by Rob and Ryan to embark on a singular fundraising activity at his peril, which somewhat parallels what the club is facing in the imminent future.

High Hopes

Thu, May 15, 202542 mins

With information from Mike and Steve on the two options for the future, the less expensive slow and steady route which would probably leave the men in League One for five to ten years, or the more expensive nuclear option of going all out to try to make it into the Championship League next year, Rob and Ryan decide on the latter $50 million investment for this next year. They have some commitments they have to meet regardless, such as completion of the Kop renovation which is the venue for an event in the summer 2026. Early season results may show if the decision was the right one. With the women, it may be the early season game against Cardiff City that will be the barometer, Cardiff City which dominated the league last season. And for the men, their barometer early season game will be against Birmingham City, which has a new equally high profile owner, at least high profile on the American side of the pond. In purchasing the team, one of the things Rob and Ryan wanted to accomplish was a renewed pride in the town. Some local business owners are profiled, one a Ukrainian couple who escaped the war in their homeland with only what they could carry in three suitcases, and three additional bags.

Disney FC

Thu, May 22, 202538 mins

Many online trolls have condescendingly referred to Wrexham AFC as Disney FC in Ryan and Rob's Hollywood connections, the commodification of the club, and this docuseries having that largely "happy ending" feel. They go with the flow and provide the Wrexham AFC story to mid-season much like a Disney movie with all the Disney tropes. Included within the story is an update on Humphrey's marathon training, for which he has the benefit of all the team's health and medical professionals.

Built to Last

Thu, May 29, 202542 mins

In the approach to mid-season, the two extremes of Wrexham AFC are presented, namely in terms of age. The Wrexham Development Academy has been in place to foster young talent, many academy graduates who have gone on to become invaluable members of the men's team, which, in the long run, is seen as a better approach to acquiring young players than on the free market. Administration needs to make necessary expensive upgrades to the program including to the physical infrastructure. A program on the women's side has not been as well developed, yet, it seen as an important step in the team having so far a middling season. On the other end are the still producing players who are closer to the end of their playing careers than to the start. Special focus is on thirty-seven year old "subber" Steven Fletcher and thirty-eight year old Mark Howard, the latter who, time and time again as a second or third stringer, has been asked to fill in in goal due to injury, he having carried the team, over the course of Rob and Ryan's tenure, to successful period after successful period. Also fitting in somewhat into this category is forty-one year old previous non-runner Humphrey, the status of his marathon training shown with twenty weeks to go until race day.

Anything's Possible

Thu, Jun 5, 202543 mins

In life and in football, it is sometimes necessary to say goodbye. The goodbyes in one form or another are told of individuals associated with Wrexham AFC, arguably the most poignant being that to Arthur Massey, the club's oldest and longest supporter upon his passing just past his one hundredth birthday. Some of those other goodbyes may be to some players, especially as the key strikers don't seem to be doing their job of late, namely being able to put the ball at the back of the opponent's goal. But with goodbyes come in many cases hellos, in Arthur's case the latest addition to his family who may be him in another hundred years. With the players, Phil is feeling the pressure to get some strikers by the end of the mid-season trade period to up their goal count, but doing so will likely come at a pricey financial cost.

Red Dragons

Thu, Jun 12, 202542 mins

The role of courage is the running theme. Wrexham AFC's acquisition of high profile strikers during the mid-season trade period seems to be paying off, leaving the fate of premiere players like Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer up in the air. There may be sentimental feelings toward keeping them on the squad as they were instrumental in getting the team promoted twice in two years. Paul in particular feels that recuperation from injury and being demoted with those additions has led to a downward cycle mentally. Regardless of what happens with him, he can put his celebrity to good use for some Wrexham fans, one who is dealing with a much more serious issue than whether he is retained. Meanwhile, Humphrey and Shaun are both in new roles with the club. Humphrey uses his in association to his marathon training, he not looking forward to running the New York City Half Marathon with six weeks to go to the full in Manchester. And Shaun takes the opportunity in his new role to view one of the club's projects, Kick4Life FC based in Lesotho, its raison d'être solely for social change.

Life or Death

Thu, Jun 19, 202543 mins

It's life and death for both the women and the men approaching the final stretch of the season. After a relatively poor start, the women are battling for the fourth and final spot in the top half at the end of Phase 1, which would put them into the playoffs. And with the men, it is a must win against teams battling for the top 6 (the top two automatic promotions, and the four making it into the playoffs), and should wins against all others. Battling for second with the top spot seemingly out of reach, they not only have to win, but put the ball in the goal (one of their recent acquisitions who has yet to score) as if they are tied with Wycombe Wanderers at the end of the season, the other team battling for that second spot, Wrexham AFC would most-likely finish third in the goal differential, Wrexham having had a bad recent history with the playoffs. But the importance of football in the big scheme of life is put into perspective in discussing a serious single vehicle car accident with one of the players behind the wheel, and a serious medical emergency at an away game but in the Wrexham end of the stadium.

Do a Wrexham

Thu, Jun 26, 202539 mins

At the beginning of the season, most pundits believed Wrexham AFC would be mid-table at best, they needing to spend a few years in League One before even contending for one of the top spots for further promotion. But with five games left in the season, Wrexham AFC is sitting in the second and final automatic promotion spot, although finishing there at the end of those five games is not a guarantee in the strong possibility they will do what has been colloquially referred to as "pulling a Wrexham" and choke in the big moments. It may come down to the last game of the season for both Wrexham AFC and their primary rival Wycombe Wanderers to decide if Wrexham AFC gets the final promotion spot or if they will be relegated to the dreaded playoffs. Meanwhile, it's review day at the Wrexham Academy, the graduates who are all hoping for a contract with the first team. It's Manchester Marathon race day for Humphrey, whose running history and future are discussed beyond what he does in the race. And an update is provided on Wrexham fan, twelve year old Archie White, who is battling a rare form of leukemia.
