Season 9 of the reality show is set in Texas and British Columbia and features a much larger cast than previous seasons: 29 contestants are asked to participate in the various challenges of the first two episodes, so that their number can be narrowed down to 16. The show is once again hosted by Padma Lakshmi, joined for the occasion by returning head judge Tom Colicchio, and fellow judges Gail Simmons, Emeril Lagasse and Hugh Acheson.
