Fox's The Following opened to killer ratings on Jan. 21, attracting 13.3 million viewers (which includes three days of DVR use). Week 2 was just as sizzling for the new Kevin Bacon thriller, which experienced an even bigger DVR lift. Not bad for a show that doesn't look and wasn't marketed like your typical broadcast drama.

Monday Playlist: Dreary Deception, Return of Birth, Bunheads, Bachelor

The one thing a potential guilty pleasure can't afford to be guilty of is boredom. Just look at the current standard-bearer: ABC's outrageous Scandal, with its whiplash plotting and rat-a-tat-tat dialogue delivered at such hyperspeed you don't have time to dwell on the berserk absurdities, because you're having such a blast. NBC's tepid new mystery-soap hybrid Deception (10/9c) deceives itself if it thinks it belongs in that gonzo company. It even pales next to the diminished second season of Revenge, which needs to refocus on the Emily-vs.-Graysons dynamic and forget the Initiative — yawn — ever existed.

Question: Now that Happy Endings and Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23 have been banished to Sundays nights to wither away, isn't this a lesson we all saw coming by piling on sitcoms against each other on Tuesdays? I can potentially see ABC saving Happy Endings to prolong its syndication opportunities, but both shows were buried without much support (premiering in late October) and ABC seems to have gone down the Cougar Town route again. Apart from protected golden child Modern Family and reliable The Middle, ABC has a poor record of keeping their sitcoms on the air over the last several years, and now we have two more to add to the long list here. It's only a matter of time before Suburgatory enjoys a similar fate. Throwing them opposite hot thing New Girl and a Matthew Perry vehicle Go On seemed foolish on ABC's part.

Some of my favorite moments on the show have always been the lighthearted sibling moments with the jokes and teasing. Those moments are all but gone as the Kristina storyline has taken precedence this year. From the Twitter and Facebook comments I've read, it is really ringing realistically to many viewers. The show is handling it with grace, but it's so very heavy that it seems like a departure for a show that has always had a good dose of comedy in each episode. I doubt that they're gaining viewers this year. My fear is that for a show that has always seemed to get renewed by the skin of its teeth, this feels like the end. Do you have any insight as to ratings or where it stands with NBC? — Jennifer

The Mob Doctor's pilot episode ended with a literal bang when mob boss Paul Moretti (Michael Rapaport) was gunned down by former mob leader Constantine Alexander (William Forsythe) right in front of Grace (Jordana Spiro). But the end of last week's episode revealed that Moretti didn't actually die. The Mob Doctor: Is There a Bumpy Road Ahead for Grace and Brett?

The Mob Doctor's Grace Devlin (Jordana Spiro) and Brett Robinson (Zach Gilford) face all the obstacles a typical couple in their position would — working long hours, getting to know one another's families, and navigating the awkwardness of dating your boss. Oh, and then there's the whole issue of Grace secretly working for the Chicago mafia. "I think [Brett] is sort of an escape for her from her whole background and where she grew up, and obviously from the mob," Gilford tells TVGuide.com. "But he's not totally different. He's not a pushover. He challenges her ... and I think he finds her strength and rebelliousness kind of attractive and appealing."
