Holly asks Doug if she can get a raise for walking Arthur, while Carrie gets a promotion on being the project supervisor which changes her hours from 8 PM to 6 AM, so now Doug and Carrie get to hardly see one another. Doug also has trouble sleeping at night so he decides to use Arthur to solve his problems.

His friend is no longer working there but Arthur cannot bring himself to tell Deacon and the rest of the crew as they continue to hand him parking tickets to take care of.

Carrie thinks Holly bought her a leather jacket, because Arthur gets Holly to disclose Carrie's gift to him.

Carrie is stressing about her upcoming job evaluation and Lou Ferrigno always takes an interest on how her day is going. So Carrie begins to feel that Doug doesn't think about her as much as she thinks about him.

Doug and Carrie go to the supermarket and pick up their developed pictures, however they get another couple's pictures and in every picture the couple is doing something exciting. This makes Carrie feel that she and Doug don't do enough with their lives. Doug does not want to do anything exiting until he picks up the couple's newest pictures again and looks at their racy photos. Arthur gets a cell phone and has no one to talk to.

Doug has to cancel dinner with Carrie on Valentine's Day because IPS is having him deliver penguins to Albany. But he is in for a surprise when the penguins get loose in his truck. Holly just got dumped by her boyfriend and comes crying to Carrie, so Carrie tries to make her feel better by going out with Holly to a club. Arthur and Spence spend their Valentine's at the local senior center.

When Doug and Carrie's neighbors ask them to a relaxing vacation, they hurry to answer yes for the offer. But before they go Arthur tells them their is a fowl odor coming from the basement. Doug takes a look and a he sees mold growing in the walls, but he decides to not tell Carrie because he knows that they wouldn't go on their vacation. But when they're there, Arthur calls and tells them that the mold got severely worse and it would cos $7,000 to fix it. So Doug tries to keep a close eye on their money spending for the rest of the trip.

Doug forgot to tell Carrie a minor detail about their house 6 years prior comes back to cost the couple $12,000, which they don't have. Doug's father shows up to offer financial advice, driving a wedge between Doug and Carrie over clothing costs. Arthur devises a plan of his own by getting the money from Spence's mom.

Danny becomes an IPS driver and Doug gets upset because he feels that Danny is always following in Doug's footsteps. Doug's boss also told him to show Danny the ropes. But when Doug gives Danny his route to prove to him he cant do that well, Danny proves him wrong by completing the route 45 minutes faster then Doug. Holly tells Arthur that he is like a Grandfather to her, but Arthur wants to be more like a Dad.

When Doug and Carrie notice that they are starting to get out of debt and doing better with their money, they decide to go out and buy something for themselves. Carrie goes out and buys a $400 dollar jacket which makes Doug freak out. So when Carrie goes back to return it she figures out a loop hole in the system by returning the stuff she buys so she doesn't really ever buy anything. Spence's girlfriend Denise meets his dog Alan, but Denise is really frightened of dogs.

When Doug Heffernan (Kevin James) finds out Arthur (Jerry Stiller) has a half-brother named Skitch (Shelley Berman), with whom Arthur owns a house, he wants Arthur to move in with him. Doug and Carrie visit his parents in Florida. Carrie finds out his parents never told him his dog died; they simply bought a new one, several times. Carrie tells Doug and he asks his parents why they lied and if there's more he doesn't know. He ends up finding out more about himself than he bargained for. Meanwhile, Spence wants Arthur's help in making the encounter between his mother and Denise a smooth one.

Doug and Carrie's bed breaks down and as a temporary solution they borrow the beds from Deacon's children who don't need them anymore. The sleeping apart turns out to be a real eye-opener and they start to do more things by themselves. Meanwhile, Arthur discovers a window in the basement and finds out neighbor Lou Ferrigno is a real gossip.
