He forms a trial team of his own, consisting of young lawyers, like Casey Woodland, the son of a legislator, who get an opportunity to learn straight from the master, if they can stand his hellish pace, and walk the tightrope between respecting the law while using it and doing whatever it takes to win. A private investigator helps out, digging up factual information. In nearly every episode, a criminal is found out and put behind bars, after testing out tactics in Stark's private mock court. Sebastian often also has to deal with his daughter Julie, who surprisingly chose to live with him after his divorce, rather than with her mother in New York City.

It's Official: CBS Renews Christine, Unit and HIMYM
This just in: CBS has renewed TV's funniest traditional sitcom, New Adventures of Old Christine, for a 22-episode fourth season.This is bad news for ABC, which had been aggressively courting Old Christine for months. In fact, I'm told the Alphabet net had a deal in place to pick the show up had CBS passed. Answer: She's due in March, so, um, no. But Shark execs are turning this crisis into an opportunity and bringing in a big-name actress to replace Ryan during her absence. One option that was being bandied about pre-strike was bringing back previous guest star Sherry Stringfield to fill the void. Not sure if that's still in the cards.

Just a quick addendum to the "Short Cuts" item posted this Monday morning. Getting back to us on the matter of possibly writing in female lead Jeri Ryan's just-announced pregnancy — the actress is due in March 2008 — Shark creator/executive producer Ian Biederman tells TVGuide.com, "We're thrilled for Jeri," then adds, "as of now, no decision has been made about how her pregnancy will or won't be incorporated into the show."At the end of the hit drama's first season, a plot twist found Ryan's character joining the ranks of James Woods' high-profile crime unit, ostensibly further increasing Ms. Devlin's own profile on the series. (Not that Jeri Ryan's profile has ever, ever suffered.)

Thursday's Ratings: Fox Traps Young Demo with Dance, Lyrics
Stop me if you've heard this one. On Thursday, Fox's So You Think You Can Dance came in first in the 18-49 demo, with a 3.3 rating. Don't Forget the Lyrics came in second with a 3.0 rating in that age group. CBS' lineup brought up the rear, with Big Brother 8 (2.7, third in the demo), CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (2.6, fourth in the demo) and Shark (2.1, fifth in the demo). Because, really, what says "young" and "hip" and "now" like cranky ol' James Woods?

Kevin Pollak, with whom James Woods shared the silver screen in Casino, is joining Shark in the recurring role of new Los Angeles District Attorney Lloyd Cutler. Another new face coming on board CBS' hit drama is Kevin Alejandro (you say Ugly Betty, I say Drive), playing a street-smart prosecutor who specializes in organized crime. Sounds like the "Sam Page replacement" Ausiello scooped a ways back, yes?Also per the Reporter, ABC's Cavemen — namely, Cro-Mag Joel's younger brother — is getting a makeover. Sam Huntington (Superman Returns' Jimmy Olsen) is in as Andy, while Dash Mihok is out as Jamie. What's more, the pilot screened at the upfronts will not kick off the series in the fall. Instead, a new opener is being filmed, one which better (meaning at all) addresses the cavemen's existence in modern society. Small detail, that.
Shark Wrangler Previews Season 2 Changes
Shark creator Ian Biederman has signed a two-year deal with 20th Century Fox TV to continue on as show-runner for the hit drama and develop new projects. Heralding Biederman's success, 20th Century president Dana Walden tells Variety, "Ian has created a larger-than-life character in Sebastian Stark that... captured the imagination of the amazing Jimmy Woods, a feature actor who'd never done a television series. The result was the year's most-watched new drama."Looking ahead to Shark's Season 2, Biederman says, "We want to make it a combination of provocative drama and interesting characters... not just a procedural." Tweaks include Jeri Ryan's DA joining Stark's team, giving the supporting cast meatier stories and bringing back Stark's ex-wife.

Meanwhile, the search for his replacement is on. A casting call has gone out for a "sexy, good-looking actor in his twenties." Producers want someone who can go toe-to-toe with James Woods. CBS: We've Got Ratings, Now We Want Buzz!
It isn't enough for CBS to be the most-watched network. At the presentation of its new fall schedule, network execs announced they want their shows to be talked about, too.It's a new version of an old tune. For years, CBS has had the largest number of viewers, but many of them were old and not as desirable to advertisers. Thursday's ratings headlines include:— Smallville (with 4.77 million total viewers) was up about 300,000 week-to-week, while Supernatural held steady at 3.2 mil.— Picking up 3.4 million viewers versus its previous outing, CSI (23.83 mil) bested Grey's Anatomy (20.96 mil) for the first time since Sept. 28.— While the overlapping numbers for Earl and The Office are fuzzier and thus harder to pinpoint, it appears that 30 Rock improved upon its last Wednesday airing by about 160K, albeit with an audience (approx. 4.96 mil) that was little more half as large as the night's other super-sized sitcoms.— Shark (15.32 mil), up 1.7 million, trumped ER (12.41 mil), which was down two mil.
