Eventually, Peter and Brian determine that the suspect is James Woods, with whom Peter had an earlier run-in (and defeated by locking him in a crate inside a government warehouse). An embittered James is able to obtain a fraudulent identification card and literally takes over Peter's role as head of the household. The Griffins are outraged and want James arrested, but he fools Lt. Swanson into thinking he is Peter and has the real Peter escorted from "his" home. While James tries to establish himself as "Peter" (even going so far as to wearing Peter's clothing), the real Peter and Brian go to a hotel and plot their revenge ... by stealing James' identity in return. After Stewie presents Peter with a phony identification card of his own, he convinces the public that he is James Woods, all the while making rude and inconsiderate remarks to ruin his reputation. The coup de gras comes when Peter goes on "The Late Show With David Letterman," claiming that he is staring in a 1920s-style slapstick comedy depiction of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center. Wanting to salvage what little reputation he has left, James wants to settle the score once and for all. However, Peter and Brian set up a trap box and bait it with Reese's Pieces. James falls for the trap and is taken away by the authorities, while Peter's identity is restored and he is reunited with his family.

Lois becomes fed up with Peter's immature antics and desire to be around his friends. Brian - who has just won an essay contest and is invited to a dinner at Martha's Vineyard to accept the award - invites Peter and Lois along, sensing time away from home might heal their differences. While Lois makes every attempt to work on their marriage by planning several activities, Peter continues to be his old self. At the awards ceremony, as Brian is reciting his poem, a highly intoxicated Peter arrives and makes a fool out of himself; at one point, he announces he has "married" Nathan Lane (despite incorrectly claiming that same-sex marriages are illegal in Massachusettes). An embarrassed Lois decides to enjoy her planned activities with Brian, and they have a great time. Later, Brian admits he wrote the poem for Lois. However, he loses self-control and makes an aggressive pass at Lois; he is kicked out of the room. The next morning, Peter learns about what happened and confronts Brian, and things quickly escalate into violence. Eventually, everyone makes up and close out their visit by mimicking a tourism commercial for Massachusettes. In the subplot, Herbert has been hired to watch Meg, Chris and Stewie. After Herbert makes several sexually suggestive remarks to Chris, Chris finally asks, "Are you a pedophile?"
