The first episode of Season 9 is set in 1965, when Fred (Cliff Parisi) finds an abandoned baby in a dustbin, who he later discovers is the son of a priest's housekeeper. Meanwhile, Phyllis (Linda Bassett) helps a soon-to-be mother to move into a place owned by the city, but soon discovers that her older son suffers from diphtheria. The rest of the season features the group of women helping out as many people as they can, regardless of their status: young prostitutes, people of different ethnicities, and poor and homeless women. They also discover that the Nonnatus House is set to be demolished.
