The fifth season of this period drama opens in the year 1961. It's business as usual for the midwives and nuns of Nonnatus house, caring for the sick and bringing new life into the world. Meanwhile, the Poplar district of London is being affected by social change, with the improvement in housing, sanitation and health care. Throughout the season, the midwives encounter complex and difficult medical cases, ranging from an outbreak of typhoid to the rise in lung cancer, a teenage pregnancy and a mother who vanishes. But all are distraught when two babies with severe deformities are born under their care, several months apart from one another. As they struggle to understand why, they must find ways to deal with the resulting medical and emotional fallout.
