When Junior (Marcus Scribner) realizes college puts too much pressure on him, he decides to take a leap year. Dre (Anthony Anderson) and Bow (Tracee Ellis Ross) don't agree with his decision and try to change his mind, without success. Meanwhile, Ruby (Jennifer Lewis) suggest that the twins share a room, with the idea being immediately shut down by both Diane (Marsai Martin) and Jack (Miles Brown). As season 5 progresses, Junior struggles with living with his parents and trying to find his true calling, while Jack and Diane go through some growing pains. Later on, the Johnsons take in Dre's teenage cousin Kyra (Quvenzhané Wallis), hoping to give her a chance at a better life.
