Five Ways MTV Could Relive Its Youth at Age 30
On Aug. 1, 1981, with the help of the Buggles and their song "Video Killed the Radio Star," MTV launched into orbit. That means that MTV is turning 30. That's nearly a generation older than those in its 12-to-18 target demographic. Break out the dentures and Depends! Seriously though, MTV is far different now. Really, with the boost of Jersey Shore and the 16 and Pregnant and Teen Mom shows, it's a different animal from when the channel was 27. When people talk about its changing face, the "Play videos again!" critique is never far from the discourse; yet, it's hard to see how straightforward music-video programming would fit in to a YouTubed world. Plus, MTV already has a bunch of offshoot stations like MTV Jams to do just that. That said, it would be nice for MTV to relive what it once did well as a general pop-culture authority. There's Nothing Strange About an Addiction to My Strange Addiction
My Strange Addiction (Sundays, 10/9c, TLC) is maybe the most entertaining freak show on television now, and definitely the most guilt-free one. While shows such as Celebrity Rehab, Intervention and Hoarders enlist subjects whose participation is possibly clouded (or motivated) by substance or mental illness, My Strange Addiction is more of a platform for reasonably coherent people to share their weirdness (since they are, after all, signing up for a show that has the word "strange" in its title). My Strange Addiction embraces those who embrace their own eccentricities. And, boy, are they eccentric. TLC will air the fifth and sixth episodes of the show's second season on Sunday, and by then we will have been treated to snapshots of the lives of people who are "addicted" to the likes of cycling, eating dryer sheets, chomping rocks and carrying around a pillow...

OWN's Serving Life is Affirming
Though not reflected in the ratings, the Documentary Club is one thing the Oprah Winfrey Network is doing right. Serving Life, which premieres Thursday at 9/8c, makes the channel 3-for-3 in its presentation of feature-length cultural studies. The riveting Serving Life focuses on four new volunteers in the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola's hospice program — all long-term inmates themselves. Because the average sentence at the maximum security prison is 93 years, inmates die there, some inevitably from terminal illness.
