In stories motivated by obsession, hatred, politics, and fanaticism there are covert plots and dark conspiracies taking shape. For decades, the details of these plans, hatched to put an end to tyranny, have remained virtually unknown. Now, we go behind closed doors to meet the rebels, revolutionaries, and intelligence operatives tasked with undertaking these ruthless takedowns. What was their rationale for bloodshed? From unchecked rises in power, to homegrown genocide and worse - what did these dictators do to inspire murderous intent? As assassins trained and toiled to prepare for rare windows of opportunity, who were the ones who funded them, equipped them, and backed them with a revolutionary spirit? And in the moment of truth, did events unfurl to leave one dead and the other holding a smoking gun? These are the plots that were designed To Kill a Dictator.

Episode 1

Fidel Castro

In the 1960s, the spectre of Communism looms large, as the United States ramps up its efforts to quell leftist movements across the world and in the Americas. In Cuba, a leftist lawyer leads a revolution against a fearsome dictator and takes office. CIA intelligence fears a Communist threat, now terrifyingly close to home. Authorised to launch an offensive by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, the CIA trains anti-Castro militants to undermine and eventually take out the dictator. Before long, a cabal of conspirators takes shape, as the CIA colludes with mafia, American business leaders, and local revolutionaries. Plots involving poison pills, psychedelic drugs, and a disastrous landing at the Bay of Pigs all fail, and spark a crisis of confidence in the CIA. As Castro's grip on Cuba grows stronger, and as Cuba confirms a Soviet connection with the Cuban Missile Crisis, efforts to dispatch Fidel Castro become more desperate. Plot after plot, Fidel Castro becomes the man who survives. But, as an assassin goes rogue and vows his revenge, will this dictator finally succumb to a deadly threat?
