The Dick Van Dyke Show

Rob Petrie is the head writer for the television sketch comedy, the Alan Brady Show, starring the egotistical Alan Brady. Rob's appointment started off as being a controversial one, especially to his two co-writers, the more experienced Buddy Sorrell and Sally Rogers, who end up becoming his friends regardless. Rob has to balance his New York City work life with his New Rochelle home life with wife Laura Petrie, who he met while he was in the army and she a dancer with a USO troupe, and their young son Ritchie. Although largely content in her roles as housewife and mother, Laura on occasion aspires to her former dancer life, which places added complications into the marriage.

Rob, Buddy, Sally and even Alan and Mel all decide to watch the live broadcast to see what Johnny will get Laura to do or say. They only manage to watch Laura's introduction, where she says only the right and nice things about Alan and the show. What they don't see is the end of the broadcast where Johnny manages to make Laura drop a bombshell of secret news specifically about Alan. When Rob finds out, he and Laura just hope that by a miracle Alan doesn't find out; but, later sure that Alan knows what Laura said on national television, both Rob and Laura take different approaches to make amends and/or protect Rob's job.

The departed souls are a close-knit, eclectic group that includes a saucy Prohibition-era lounge singer, a pompous 1700s Militiaman, a 1960s hippie fond of hallucinogens, and an overly upbeat '80s scout-troop leader. If the spirits were anxious about the commotion a renovation and B&B will create in their home, it's nothing compared to when they realize Samantha is the first live person who can see and hear them.
