As the third season begins, Paul (Oliver Platt) recovers from a heart attack while Adam (Gabriel Basso) turns to prayer and moves in with Uncle Sean (John Benjamin Hickey). Cathy (Laura Linney) finds new meaning in her life after meeting "joyologist" and motivational speaker Joy Kleinman (guest-star Susan Sarandon). Joy takes to Paul who finds a new career as a motivational speaker opening for Joy on her tour. Sean runs a phone-sex business and begins a new relationship with a married couple. Cathy meets a mysterious stranger on a trip to Puerto Rico.
