Laura Linney stars as Cathy Jamison a schoolteacher who is facing a terminal skin cancer diagnosis. In the first season, Cathy struggles to tell her husband Paul (Oliver Platt), son Adam (Gabriel Basso) and homeless brother Sean (John Benjamin Hickey) about her diagnosis. Cathy decides she and Paul need some time apart. Cathy pursues non-traditional cancer treatments from Bee Man played by Liam Neeson. Cynthia Nixon guest stars as Cathy's high-school friend Rebecca in whom Sean takes a special interest. Phyllis Somerville as eccentric neighbor Marlene and Gabourey Sidibe as smart-mouthed Andrea round out the cast.
