A somber two-part history of 20th-century conflict as seen by the journalists who experienced it. "Dead men by mass production" is what Ernie Pyle, perhaps the best of them, called it. Part 1 concentrates on World Wars I and II, but also covers the Spanish-American War (journalists such as Richard Harding Davis made war reporting a "dashing profession" for the first time, says narrator Linda Hunt) and the Spanish Civil War. Among the other interviewees: Walter Cronkite and Andy Rooney.
