The conviction overturned on a legal technicality and released from prison, Danny, accompanied by his lawyer Noah Harturian, decided en route back to Lindero that he wouldn't return. Georgia not only wants him to find Danny, but to prove that Danny wasn't guilty of the rape murder. Unaware of Georgia's personal life, Mannix learns of her ex-husband Jake Durian, a former veterinarian and an environmentalist whose whereabouts she doesn't know and who Mannix suspects is harboring Danny. Mannix finds that his presence in town is of great interest to the Chief of Police, Harry Decken, who seems to be hiding something in being protective toward a group of young motorcycle riding punks who have been harassing Mannix ever since his arrival, Decken justifying their behavior as kids just being kids.

With only a $5,000 advance in hand, Mannix is off to his next case, no indication of who the client or what the nature of the case are, an advance that size indicative of the secrecy. Elliot and Mannix unexpectedly hit bad weather, the plane crash landing. He will discover that that help is a mixed blessing as it is from someone who himself is wanted and that anyone with him will be collateral damage. But Mannix can see the big picture about the plight of his helper. Meanwhile, a worried Peggy gets Art's help to find out what happened to Mannix.

Beyond the police investigating, Mannix is called by occasional client, Lou's publisher George Fallon, to assist on the case. Mannix's initial belief is that Lou was killed because of a past story or one he was about to write. Lou's research assistant, Bill Saunders, to who George offers the column, thinks it is a story Lou was investigating, that the recent death of prominent business owner Andrew Alferro, which was ruled accidental in he being drunk when he drove off a cliff in his limousine, was really a syndicate assassination, Lou who eventually came to the conclusion that it wasn't the syndicate. As Mannix looks into Lou's investigation of the Alferro matter, the case is complicated by Tina, who has regressed into past memories, and who believes she killed her father and can kill anyone at will at being angry.

Mannix will discover anomalies at both ends, namely with the request itself to find Mark and owner of the small plane he was flying at the origin, and at Gopher Flats itself at the destination, it which ends up still being populated by a small number of people who don't seem to take too kindly to strangers. Silent Target

Sun, Oct 28, 197352 mins

Mannix is off on a remote and rustic fishing trip to what one person describes at the "end of road", namely Turtle Lake located in the middle of the Nevada desert. Driving en route in the middle of the desert with seemingly nothing around, Mannix runs into car problems. Walking for about a mile, he finds a house behind locked gates. Its owner, J.H. Morrell, states that there currently is no communication, i.e. telephone or a vehicle, for help with the car until his son returns from a trip to Reno, and that the complex, which is filled with young adults, is a hotel of sorts for guests to be able to fulfill the residency requirement for quickie divorces. What Mannix doesn't know is that he has walked into a refuge for hitmen, what one person likens to a secretarial pool where its residents are either cooling off after a job or awaiting information for a next job. One of the hitmen, Harry Tass, knows Mannix and believes he may have been sent by the authorities, Harry who is off to LAX for his next job of a bigwig making a transfer. While Morrell, Tass and the others try to decide what to do about Mannix, Mannix may have an ally in Elena, Tass' girlfriend, who, while knowing that Tass kills people for a living, sees in Mannix a real human being while all Tass' hits are just nameless and bodyless entities.

What seems to have been stolen is a brooch Terry was wearing, what she had told Mannix was costume jewelry given to her by her father, Howard Graham, who did not attend the party in being out of town. However, with one of the jewels having popped off the brooch and found next to Terry's body, Malcolm informs Mannix that it is not costume, but a real diamond. Mannix and Malcolm suspect that the brooch actually is part of a $1 million collection called the Auroras that belonged to Howard's former in-laws, Terry's maternal grandparents, who disowned their daughter when she was alive in not agreeing to her marriage to Howard. The Auroras were stolen five years ago, Mannix who was hired then to locate them, which he never could do. They also suspect that Howard was the original thief, whoever mugged Terry knew that the jewels were real, and that the mugger now has the entire collection. Mannix again goes on a quest to locate the Auroras, many people who will seemingly kill for them. The case is only complicated by there being at least one very credible fake collection masquerading as the real things.

Race Against Time

Sun, Jan 6, 197452 mins

Mannix is contacted by Hank Pritchard about a matter of some urgency. It concerns a John Doe hit-and-run victim, reported in the newspaper as having been killed in the incident, but who, a Mr. Cramer, is really alive in serious condition and in traction in the hospital. The planted newspaper story for Cramer's protection is because he, secretly in the US, has news that political activist Victor Lucas, who Mannix knows from Korea as the head of a peacekeeping force and considers the most inspiring person he's ever met, is dying from heart failure and requires a pacemaker to survive. The only person with the skill to conduct the operation is Nobel laureate Dr. Miles Considine, who balks at the mission in that Lucas is currently in hiding in a country with a military dictatorship in working with an underground movement against the government that would like Lucas and anyone associated to him dead, but as important does not agree with anyone "with a name" and/or money bypassing the queue of other patients equally as deserving to be alive. Mannix's role is to be the doctor's security detail in ensuring he makes it in and out of the country alive, they to be undercover from start to finish. All they know is that the mission is named Libra, the secret code word used by anyone associated with the mission, most who only know their small part to minimize risk of the it falling apart if any one person is captured.

Race Against Time: Part II

Sun, Jan 13, 197452 mins

Beyond the less than ideal "operating room" conditions, Dr. Considine, who was just about ready to operate on Victor Lucas, faces a bigger challenge as Mannix has discovered that someone has managed to break into the container holding the pacemaker and destroy it. Dr. Turman, however, knows that there is a pacemaker at the national hospital where he used to work, they needing to figure out the logistics to get to and from the hospital and steal the pacemaker without detection. What they are unaware of which will make their task even more difficult is that Dr. Waldo and Colonel DuPar have figured out that Mannix and Dr. Considine truly are working against the government, and have taken steps to inform the country of that fact. Even if Mannix and Dr. Considine are able to get the pacemaker and make it back in time to save Lucas, they have the further problems of needing to discover the mole who sabotaged the original pacemaker, and make it out of the country after all is said and done with the entire country now knowing to be on the lookout for them.

The Dark Hours

Sun, Jan 20, 197452 mins

Entering his dark office late at night, Mannix is ambushed, hauled away by his attackers in a van, shot with his own gun, and dumped down a steep hillside next to the road left for dead. Mannix is eventually found by two young hikers. First indeed thought to be dead by Malcolm and the other first responders, Mannix shows signs of life by the EMT en route to the hospital, he who goes into emergency surgery upon his arrival. Going in and out of semi-consciousness following the surgery, Mannix clings to life while Malcolm and Peggy try to get whatever information they can out of him about what happened, which is little to nothing. In the process, Mannix himself does reflect on what happened, he not knowing the entire story himself. He is certain that it has to do with a woman named Karen Winslow, who hired him in noticing that she was being followed by a man she didn't know, Mannix identifying him to her as enforcer Johnny Sands. That identification brought into the picture two rival gangsters, Al Kordic, who had hired Karen to write the memoirs of the family patriarch, "Don" Vince Kordic, murdered six months ago via a car bomb, and Matt Brandon. Kordic's stepmother, Regina Kordic, had also just been found murdered, Malcolm and the authorities who believe Kordic the murderer in the general knowledge that there was no love lost between them, while Kordic believes Brandon killed both his father and his stepmother in that gangster war. Within this situation, Mannix has to figure out who would have wanted him dead as especially Kordic and Brandon were fighting with each other.

Leaving the wedding reception held at Mannix's office, Malcolm is shot and slightly injured, but Norma is dead upon gunshot impact in what looks to be a targeted hit meant for Malcolm by an unknown shooter in a passing car, with Malcolm able to see the license plate. The car belongs to a company owned by drug kingpin Johnny Sato, who Malcolm has been working long and hard to put behind bars. Sato and his second in charge Vic Grant, however, have an alibi for the time of the shooting, which doesn't matter to Malcolm, who is certain Sato was behind what happened and appears to want to exact vigilante justice much to the chagrin of both Mannix and Lt. Bob Naylor, Malcolm's former partner and longtime friend who is leading the official police investigation. But as Naylor and Mannix, who is assisting, proceed in the investigation, Mannix begins to believe that things are falling in place a little too easily, that belief strengthened as time goes on, and that makes it seem that Norma, for whatever reason, truly was the target, and not Malcolm himself.

Walk a Double Line

Sun, Feb 10, 197452 mins

Peggy is able to convince Mannix at least to consider talking to Cathy Walker to take her on as a client in what seems antithetical to what Cathy would want: to find her husband Steve Walker who is wanted for murdering his boss, Victor De Marco. It seems to be an open and shut case in that Steve was the only other person in De Marco's locked office when two gunshots were heard by many in the general vicinity including Cathy, the door was broken down from the outside, Steve was inside holding the murder weapon with De Marco's dead body slumped in his chair, with Steve, himself shot in the process, able to escape and go into hiding. Largely on the faith Cathy has in the innocence of her husband, Mannix does take the case despite he learning she being less than forthright about Steve's criminal past in his youth, and he changing his name a result. Mannix will find that there seems to be a blind loyalty to De Marco by his staff including the second in charge Paul Walker, the security guard Matt Doyle (who is after Steve himself in that loyalty), the staff photographer Dick Harley, and De Marco's personal secretary Julie Miller, although beyond Steve who was in line for a promotion but who Cathy admits had a beef with him, Julie does state that De Marco was generally disliked by those who worked for him. But it may be in speaking to a less than grieving Mrs. De Marco that Mannix may get a better handle on Steve's guilt or innocence, and if the latter who may really have killed De Marco and how the killer could have gotten in and out of the locked office undetected.

However, an anonymous $500 donation was made for the girl's burial, and besides the authorities, a woman was at the burial, who Mannix assumes made the donation as no announcement was made about the burial itself. He is able to confirm that she, well off widow Elizabeth Farrell, from out of town, did make the donation for her own personal reasons. Shortly after, Liz ends up hiring Mannix as she is being stalked by someone she knows, Tommy Ryker, with a minor rap sheet at least in Los Angeles, he who had earlier threatened Mannix himself when he saw Mannix speak to Liz. Mannix catches Liz in one small lie after another, he having to sift through the lies to get to the truth and the reasons behind the lies, one of which will hold a small kernel leading to the tie between Liz, Ryker and the unknown girl.

While the death is officially ruled a suicide, Greta is certain that he was murdered as she claims to know him better than anyone in being his lover, he having no reason to kill himself. She is also certain that the murderer is one of the anonymous people, patients, he wrote about in his just released book, three case studies on who he coins Patients X, Y, and Z, all formerly or potentially homicidal. Helen Layton, a singer at the club and the driver of the other vehicle, is able to get a license plate number, the owner of the damaged car brought in. While Helen cannot definitively pick that man out in a lineup, the other two eyewitnesses, Jenny Dobbs, Nick's date that evening, and Dennis Hicks, the club's valet, are able to pick the man out without question. The problem is that he is Al Reardon, a recently divorced (his wife having left him) police sergeant, who feigns innocence despite the overwhelming evidence against him including the damaged vehicle, and asserts that he is being set up. For various reasons, Al believes the person behind the frame is Ellis Varko, who Al helped put behind bars and is working toward getting Al to recant his testimony. Much to Malcolm's chagrin, Mannix, Al's friend, tries to prove the validity of Al's claims which the DA may consider witness tampering. A Question of Murder

Sun, Mar 10, 197452 mins

The latest person to walk into Mannix's office wanting to hire him is twelve year old Kevin John Hunter, with $8 and some pocket change to prove that he's serious. His friend, generally well-liked aging boxer Bull Evans, was killed in a hit-and-run after his latest fight as the pair were headed off on their regular post-bout hamburger. While the incident was considered an accident, Kevin John asserts that not only did he see the car deliberately run over Bull in being parked in wait for them to leave the arena, but that Bull's dying words were that he was killed by Larry Gates, who just happens to be his opponent in the ring that night, Larry having won the bout in a knock-out. While Malcolm knows all about Kevin John in he having made the rounds to anyone who would listen, Mannix is the first at least to try and do something for him. Those that know Kevin John, including Martin Johnson, his grocery store where Kevin John works after school, Miss Crawford, his teacher, and his widowed mother, say that he's a good boy who would not tell a lie, but who may be swayed by emotion, in this case in Bull being the missing father figure in his life. Conversely, Gates and his manager, Ralph Lewin, state that Bull's dying words were in reference to the bout, in addition to that they have alibis for the time of the accident. Just as Mannix is about to give up in not finding any evidence to say that the death was murder, the case takes turns in ways he and Kevin John did not foresee and that Kevin John in particular really does not want to believe.

Trap for a Pigeon

Sun, Mar 24, 197452 mins

The latest case Mannix hesitates on taking on is for famed lawyer Mark Prentiss, who wants Mannix to recover some items of his that were taken in a heist from the Bedford Hotel safe deposit vault. While most of the items that were reported in the media as stolen were the higher profile ones such as $150,000 in jewels and bonds, what Prentiss wants back is his briefcase which contained papers, evidence for an imminent trial, those papers meaningless to whoever stole them. The reason for Mannix's reticence is not the papers themselves or the tight timeframe for the trial start, but rather Prentiss' client: gangster Vince Adante. Mannix's change of heart to provide Prentiss with what he states is material that proves Adante's innocence is only heightened when he checks the hotel's safe area itself in seeing the job was done by professionals who knew which boxes to hit. After speaking to snitches and fences who might be used to move the merchandise, Mannix begins to believe that the real target was the briefcase itself, especially after Prentiss confesses the nature of the "papers". What those papers would be used for is the crux of what is happening in this case.
