Record label executive Tom Farrell has an eye for talent. Akas, his boss doubts his killer-instinct so much that Tom gets fired. So he and a few friends start a minor music label, specializing in a few unknown potential pop/rock-stars, but if they pick right that also means larger labels con offer better deals. Meanwhile, Tom's sister and confident links him to over-sensitive surgeon Mike Freed and a bunch of basketball mates, including closet-guy TV reporter Jake Dunne.

Good news, Teddy Geiger! Although CBS showed no great affection for Tom Cavanagh's record-biz dramedy, Love Monkey, VH1 is singing a different tune. Starting next month, the cabler will begin unspooling all eight episodes of the series. What does that mean for Teddy Geiger? Speaking of rumors I've started,...

Speaking of rumors I've started, here's an update on the possibility of UPN picking up our beloved CBS castoff Love Monkey. A source close to Monkey confirms that UPN has expressed interest in acquiring the show's five unaired episodes, but as of now, it isn't in the plans. "But," the source adds, "anything could happen in the future." Future? Sounds to me like the ball could soon be in CW's court. Cross your fingers and stay tuned.

LOVE LOST

Emily and Jake, meet Tom. Variety reports that CBS has shelved Tom Cavanagh's Love Monkey after just three airings as part of a Tuesday-lineup shuffle. Taking over the 10 pm/ET slot is The Amazing Race (which premieres Feb. 28), clearing the way at 9 pm for The Unit, the new drama costarring President Palm--, er, Dennis Haysbert.

Love Monkey For a show that's...

Love MonkeyFor a show that's supposed to revolve around the music industry, our main characters seem to be spending an exaggerated amount of time on the basketball court. Although one of the funniest lines in last night's episode came from the second basketball scene — "that whole 'I'm so cool I don't have to shower.'" OK, now that's just wrong, everyone needs to shower! Coolness doesn't take away stinkiness. So Tom's next step in promoting his sole client, Wayne, was the genius idea of making a music video, provided they find the right director. I still think they should have gone with the first guy they interviewed, who wanted Wayne to be tied up so tight it would start to cut into his arms, but in a good way. IDOL HOLDS HIGH NOTE

This Tuesday's installment of Fox's American Idol nearly matched the contest's record-setting Jan. 17 season premiere, drawing 34.96 million viewers — an audience more than double that of the closest competitor, CBS' NCIS. Also of note from the night: ABC's Commander in Chief sank to a new series low of 10.38 million viewers, and CBS' Love Monkey made semibeautiful music with 7.58 mil, an 11 percent dip from its debut the previous week.

Love Monkey Is anyone else totally...

Love MonkeyIs anyone else totally loving this kid Wayne's music? Tom perfectly described the young artist, played by real-life musician Teddy Geiger, as having "depth, soul, and I just couldn't get it out of my head." While Tom was trying to brainstorm ways to get Wayne's name out there, I was thinking, "Duh, MySpace.com," and sure enough, that was Tom's first idea. I could so write this show... even though I have yet to sign up for MySpace. And I definitely noticed Mike staring down the hot nanny's cleavage. Love MonkeyA bit of a disclaimer: I was more than a little bit biased watching this show. Ed is one of my favorite shows, I find Tom Cavanagh utterly adorable, and to top it all off, they tossed Jason Priestley into the mix. My lingering 90210 loyalties run pretty deep. So it isn't all that surprising that I adored the first episode of this new series, in spite of its ridiculous name. (Yeah, I get that he's trying to find love and swinging between trees — it is still just a bizarre title.) It combines elements of Jerry Maguire — Tom's boardroom speech about his love for music — and High Fidelity —  the music snobbery was running rampant with the merciless mocking of artists like Air Supply and Billy Joel.
