She is arrested on terrorist charges, but she reports that Carter had raped her a few months before and that she panicked when forced to fly with him again. An investigation reveals that Carter had no criminal record, but that the airline Optimum Air knew about the rape accusations and had tried to cover them up. Further questioning reveals that Carter had previously raped another female co-pilot (with photographic records of her injuries), and that the airline and its executives were both covering crimes by their male employees, and enforcing discriminatory policies against its female employees. Carter agrees to a confession in exchange for a reduced sentence. Barba feels that the airline is to blame for the rapes and intentionally leaks information to the press. The airline faces the devaluation of its stocks due to the bad publicity, and is threatened with bankruptcy. Meanwhile, Fin has found out that Deputy Chief Dodds had secretly contacted interviews to find a potential replacement for Olivia during her time off duty. He covertly threatens Dodds during a private conversation between them.

The police recovers little to no forensic evidence from the assault, and there are no known witnesses. The victim seems to be fabricating part of her story, for publicity reasons. The police locate two viable suspects. One is Justin Vichinsky, a far-left activist who hates Martha with a passion and who had physically attacked her shortly before the rape. The other is Randy Platt, the leader of a far-right organization. He is a "loony fan" of Martha, with a history of obsessively following her across several U.S. States and sexually harassing her. The case goes to trial, which soon turns into a media circus. Since the police can not prove which of the two suspects attacked her, and since Martha's own narrative is unreliable, Barba moves to dismiss the indictment. The political supporters of both suspects proclaim their victory, while Martha promises to write a book about the failures of the criminal justice system.

She had no financial benefit from any of these cases, she was just desperate to save the life of kids who needed the organs. Franchella is sentenced to decades of prison time, while the first of the kids which she was trying to help dies of organ failure.
