Hank finds that Dale and Boomhauer have been going on a fishing trip each year and purposely excluding Bill. He prevails on them to invite himself and Bill, and Dale responds by deciding that the trip should include wives and children as well. During the first part of the trip, the men ride in one car, and the atmosphere is tense. After Dale purchases a large amount of beer, Hank is forced to ride with Peggy, Bobby, Nancy, and Joseph. Upon the group's arrival in Corpus Christi, Hank is disappointed to find that Dale, Boomhauer, and Bill have all been having a good time without him. Peggy encourages Hank to try just having a good time with his friends without trying to tell them what to do. Hank finds that he enjoys following his friends' lead for a change, but the guys eventually find that having Hank be the responsible one works out better for them all.

Bill is disappointed when the Hills recover because he can't help them any more, but Hank recommends that he take up volunteer work. Bill interviews to volunteer at a halfway house for alcoholic men and winds up agreeing to take in four of the men at his own house. Bill finds that having to take care of the additional cooking, cleaning, and shopping, plus the group therapy for the men, is tiring work, but he remains committed to the cause and enlists Hank to help him. Unfortunately, Hank finds that the director of the halfway house is disinclined to relieve Bill's burden.

Peggy suggests inviting the Ace of Diamonds and His Jewels, a Harlem Globetrotters-style barnstorming team, to Arlen, to raise money for the baseball team. Ace's team is known for playing in a comedic style, with Ace pitching blindfolded or from the outfield, always winning, and donating the winning team's share of the gate to charity. Hank convinces the Zephyrs that they can be the first team to defeat the Jewels. But when the game starts, Ace is unhappy to find that the Zephyrs are playing seriously to win.
