Tate Gifford, in town to pick up his dead son's horse, finds Cale has taken him for a ride. Matt searches for him when he doesn't return and finds the horse with no rider. When he does find Cale after returning the horse, he is too hurt to move and after losing his horse, Matt must work to keep them both alive and get help.

Conditions are mean and cruel at Pleasant Valley Orphanage. Boss Floyd Baggs and Matron Addie run the place with an iron fist. When 17-year-old Dodie gets yet another whipping, she runs away from the orphanage. Doc Adams, with his horse and buggy, comes across Dodie in the middle of nowhere, and gives her a ride into Dodge City. Dodie explores Dodge, and at a pool hall meets Whip Puckett, who starts getting fresh with her, and Ky; they wind up fighting over her. Dodie finds out that she will need to work to earn some money, so she asks Kitty for a job. Kitty finds out that Dodie is a runaway, also that she got whippings. Then Matt Dillon learns that Dodie is a runaway, and by law, he has to take her back, although he does so reluctantly. Back at the orphanage, Boss Floyd and Matron Addie act real innocent, as if they treat all the orphans nicely. Matt finds out the girls get whippings, and often the girls get nothing to eat. Marshal Matt arrests Floyd and Addie for cruelty and child neglect; in the meantime, he leaves Dodie in charge of the orphanage.

Quint's father, a white man, is murdered by a pair of white traveling ne'er-do-wells. The family had lived an isolated life but Quint had been raised essentially as a white. Quint returns with his mother to the Comanches and, after she dies a few years later, keeps his vow to forget the white half of himself and fight and kill whites. He manages to do this until a white captive of the tribe, whom the tribe intends to kill, treats him with respect and appeals to a side of Quint he thought was dead. Will Quint free the captive? If he does, how can he remain with the Comanches?

The man chosen for the experiment and brought to Dodge is mild, slight-of-frame grocer's assistant Clay Tatum. He isn't very handy with a gun, but the bet doesn't preclude his brushing up on his skills--and it turns out that he has a knack for gun play. He may be in need of it.

Dal, the son of a rich rancher, is abrasive and abusive but cowardly when confronted, having always relied on his father's wealth and influence to get him out of difficulty. When up to his usual tricks, he gets one of the ranch hands fired. The fired man takes up with a saloon girl whom Miss Kitty hired after her father was murdered. Dal takes a fancy to the girl, tries to shoot his rival, and instead shoots and kills the girl. Chester witnesses it all, and goes with Matt to Dal's ranch to arrest him. Dal's father is in disbelief, but Dal is hardly worried, confident his father will get him out of this scrape as he has all others. After he is convicted, he slowly begins to fear he will hang. While his father works to save him from the hangman, he is disgusted with his son's display of fear, sure that if he were the one facing the rope, he'd go to the gallows "with a smile."

Carrie, the widow of a rancher, never liked life on the prairie and has always hungered to travel to "the far places." She insists that her only son leave Dodge for Chicago. He does, but soon returns, saying that the life of a rancher is the only one he wants. He's also ready to settle down on the land with a local girl, a plan his mother is desperate to thwart. She invites the girl to her home in her son's absence, with a large sum of money ready to buy the girl off--and if that doesn't work, she also has a gun.

Old York tests his belief that Matt won't touch him with a bloodless robbery; when Matt finds a way to overlook it, accepting the old man's claim that a war injury has left him with mental lapses, Old York assumes he's in the clear for a bank robbery. When he pulls off the bank job and escapes, the townsfolk assume that Matt must have looked the other way, and Matt turns in his badge. He catches up with Old York and tells him that he wants his cut from the bank robbery. Were the townsfolk right--has Matt gone bad?
