He does a brisk business, filling many barrels, and what could be more logical than to hand his earnings to his betrothed for deposit in the bank in town.

Matt tries to reassure Lacey, telling her he's never seen a woman hanged. Meanwhile, Jess takes up again with the girl he was seeing before he met Lacey; that girl is poor, Lacey is the daughter of a prosperous farmer. When Lacey learns about the other woman from Ma Smalley, Lacey--and what Matt said about the hanging of women--may be put to the test.

When a trapper with suspicious motives offers to be her escort to Indian country, Matt is concerned for her safety and follows behind them with a young Army officer whose head has been turned by the pretty young widow.

When the husband winds up dead, Billy Joe finds himself accused by the family of the murder, and the father threatens to administer "justice" to Billy Joe himself. There was already a wanted poster out on him for the escape and the killing of the guard, but Billy Joe protests his innocence of it all, reminding Matt that it's his duty to protect him from the would-be lyncher.
