When Aaron proposed to Joan in Girlfriends' seventh-season finale, fans suspected that that episode was the series' swan song. But it wasn't. The show returned for an eighth and final season. But instead of going out with a bang, Girlfriends went out with a whimper — another victim of the writers' strike. Today, CW executives announced there will be no new post-strike Girlfriends episodes because the network has decided to "focus its creative and financial resources on shows that are in consideration for renewal next year." On Wednesday night, CW's top-rated series, America's Next Top Model, showed double-digit growth last season and was the No. 1 show in its time slot with women 18-34. Next season, America's Next Top Model will stay in its 8-9 pm berth, followed by the new drama Gossip Girl from 9-10 pm. From The O.C. producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, Gossip Girl is based on the best-selling young-adult book series of the same name. Is This the End for the CW's Girlfriends?
During Monday night's seventh-season finale of the CW's Girlfriends, William and Monica got back together; Maya and Darnell found a new house and bought back Darnell's old garage; and Aaron proposed to Joan. Basically, everyone got a happy ending — including Lynn (who'd landed her first regular paying gig only one week before). But it was all just too jubilant and tidy. Everyone and their mama showed up for Joan's surprise engagement party — her parents, her boss, her one-time assistant Peaches, and even her dry cleaner! Poor William Dent. For the last six years, Girlfriends' main man has been chronically unlucky in love. First, his cop fiancée Yvonne left him at the altar. The potential offshoot will center on three women whose "son or boyfriend or husband plays professional football," explains Dawn Ostroff. "It's about the women behind the men." The characters will be introduced in an episode of Girlfriends later this season.

Singer-actress Brandy, who previously headlined UPN's Moesha, is returning to series television. In an as-yet-untitled WB comedy penned by Girlfriends creator Mara Brock Akil, Brandy will play a tried-and-true New Yorker who relocates to Los Angeles to take a job as — get this — an entertainment news editor. Pfft, good luck with that, kid.
