The coming-of-age narrative follows the story of J.R., a boy whose father suddenly left him and his mother after he was born. Thus, growing up in Long Island, he finds various father figures in his life, with his Uncle Charlie leading the pack as he runs a local bar until, in his teen years, J.R. is encouraged to be a writer until he gets accepted in Yale.
