Three chipmunk brothers named Alvin, Simon, and Theodore have been adopted by and are living with Dave (human). Each episode finds them getting into trouble and new and unusual situations.

The Smurfs takes place in a fictional colony, where small blue creatures live in mushroom-shaped houses deep in the forest. The magical adventures and on-goings in the village feature a large cast of characters.

The Inspector is often assisted by a Spanish gendarme, Sergeant Deux-Deux, and together they fallibly battle villains of all shapes and sizes in various parts of the world, always on the orders of the long-suffering Surete Commissioner.

He would regularly offer essential help to famous historical figures (such as George Washington and Paul Revere), but glory always eluded him.
