In 1307, the men of Altdorf, Switzerland, chafe under the foreign brutality of Gessler the Tyrant. All but peace-loving William Tell gather in secret to plan an uprising. Gessler hears of the meeting and has his hat set upon a pole. All who pass it must bow to it or face death. Unaware of this decree, William innocently transgresses, but his execution is commuted to a wicked display of his marksmanship with arrows: He is ordered to shoot an apple from his 9-year-old son's head. William succeeds, and Gessler's injustice triggers an uprising.
